freitasm: For you folks reporting frame drops, it would help a lot if you could be more specific than just "FRAME DROP, ARGH!"

Please post:

- ISP
- DNS (ISP or third party)
- VPN or not
- Device
- Browser or app
- Date/time

If you are in then help now...

ISP: Telecom ADSL2, generally get speeds of 10-15Mb/s
DNS: UnoTelly, although disabled on the advice of Lightroom
VPN: N/A
Device: iPad Air Airplay to Apple TV3 connected to Panasonic 50" plasma (TH-P50ST60Z)
Browser or app: iPad app
Date/Time: Between 9:30PM and 10:30PM last night

had a play last night, watched a couple of episodes of seinfeld, was fine.

the biggest concern for me is device support.  i would love it if they do what quickflix promised but never delivered on and provide a freeview channel.  that would let me keep netflix on my samsung tv, ps4 etc, but also let me watch their service.  if its a choice between netflix and lightbox, netflix will win.  but if i can easily have both, i will.  easily does not mean using a computer/laptop/HTPC with a keyboard+mouse or use a chromecast etc.  a 5 year old needs to be able to operate it with a remote.

Thank you to all for the Beta access.  Lightbox is being tested in two fully kitted out 7.1 rooms (Lounge with a Panasonic 65inch Plazma and the Home Theater with a Panasonic PT-AE7000 projector).

Both of these rooms are connected to an HTPC and I have also tested it briefly via iPad Airplay to Apple TV. So far, I am also suitably impressed with the initial service interface stream quality.

However, I am also suffering what appears to be 'stuttering' and frame drop symptoms during panning shots. This was particularly bad during the Warehouse 13 Pilot last night and to a lesser so while watching 3 episodes of Vikings. I should also note that most viewing has been on a 130+ inch projector screen in the Theater room. (As a heavy Netflix user comparisons are being made to interface, picture and sound quality)

ISP - Telecom Ultra VDSL 500GB - Actual rates 46.60 Mbps down, 9.50 Mbps Up
DNS - Unotelly Auckland and Sydney servers
VPN - None
Device - Intel i5 - Sandy Bridge HTPC
Browser - Firefox latest
Date/Time - 4-August between 1500 - 2200 hours

I'll test some other browser and DNS combinations today.

I usually use a PS4 console player for viewing Netflix so that I can bitstream Dolby 5.1+ directly to my Denon and or Marantz AVRs.  Surround sound quality is also important to many users but until Lightbox expands their device app choices, PC browser output restrictions make it difficult for Home Theater users to make use of their HD sound equipment.

Overall, +1 for Lightbox out of the box

Is there any way to debug the stream? None of the keyboard shortcuts for Silverlight seem to work (disabled on purpose I assume?).

The First 48 appears to be missing narration track. The ep's on sky has narration and there looks to be gaps for it in the video.

Watched a bit more over lunch. Paused the stream for a minute. When I returned, playback proceeded for about a minute then stopped. I had to restart the episode, and reposition back where I was to resume viewing.

This is very similar to what I observed last night, so I'd be interested to see if any other iPad0->Apple TV via Airplay users are noticing similar. I'll keep an eye on it too, but suspect the issue may be that pausing it for a certain period may stop the buffering, and the only way to recover is to restart the episode.

As a reminder for those using a third party DNS service, make sure to test with your ISP's own DNS as well and see if the drop errors happen.

My test at lunchtime today was with UnoTelly DNS in play, as I personally needed to see if that combination would work. If we are to subscribe to Lightbox, it would probably need to co-exist with our current NetFlix and Hulu subscriptions.

But I'll remove it for further testing, so we don't have any false negatives on CDN delivery issues.

I tested this last night. It worked well. On the whole it was surprisingly good and stable. I haven't compared it to Netflix but I will be trialling that soon, so it will be good to have a comparison.

Only thing that I did notice was some very noticeable screen tearing during the first episode of season one of Battlestar Galactica. This wasn't noticeable during either first episode of X-Files or Louie. I'm not sure if this is due to my specific setup, ie graphic card/monitor, or the video itself. I'll be testing some other episodes and shows tonight to see if I can replicate it.

Streamed three episodes of Vikings last night - enjoyed it very much. WAF was about 2 due to the violence and gore.

ISP - Vodafone VDSL unlimited - general rates 28Mbps down, 10.3Mbps Up
DNS - Unotelly on desktop, Vodafone at router
VPN - None
Device - HP IQ816, Core2 Duo, NVidia GeForce 9600M GS, Windows 7 SP1
Connection - Wired
Browser - Chrome
Date/Time - 04 August 2120-2310 hours

Quality - very good
Sound - good
Stutter - some on panning shots but not enough to make unwatchable or cause concern
Buffering - Nil

I didn't put local DNS into the computer as I couldn't be bothered, the small amount of stutter didn't cause me enough concern to go there. I did find some things which may or may not be peculiar to my system. With fullscreen viewing mode selected:

  1. A small "v1.0.5" appears in white in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen (in the black bar) and doesn't go away - I found this a little distracting
  2. If left on the screen, the mouse does not disappear
  3. If the mouse is moved off screen anywhere other than below the control box, the control box does not disappear from the screen

I found that after viewing one episode the screen returned to the episode selection screen and automatically selected the next episode in the list, all I had to do was hit the play button. The site itself is easy to navigate and not at all cluttered. This is great stuff. Add a good selection of movies and it'll be a very compelling site to subscribe to.

I am not one of the beta testers so cant answer this - has any tried it with the Mac OSX Yosemite betas yet?  I have found that sky go does not work due to some of the changes made.

Kicking myself for putting this thread aside until I had the time to really wade into it!

I will definitely be signing up to Lightbox once it is released. Great lineup of shows so far, so will be interesting to see what else gets added.

My thoughts exactly - was lurking/following it but I don't generally subscribe to threads like this because of the sheer volume of email notifications you tend to get!!! Kinda sucks to have missed out on the beta really.

Fear not - launch date isn't too far away :-)
