trig42: Will it have advertisements?

That was my reason for cancelling Hulu+.

I wouldn't mind, say, a 15 second ad at the start of a show, but I would hate them to interrupt the show.

No ads.

I have concerns about AirPlay being a longterm viable solution for us. During the Great NetFlix Outage of 2014, I was connecting via the UnoTelly provided VPN on my iPad Air and iPhone 5, and using AirPlay to our Apple TV (Gen 3) to get the content on our TV. After streaming one show (which always streamed fine on the iOS device), I'd have to reboot the Apple TV, router (Airport Extreme Gen 5), or both. Otherwise we'd not get Airplay working correctly. Often the content would fail to Airplay altogether, but sometimes we'd get audio playing through the TV but no video.

That sounds like an issue with either your WiFi or Apple TV box to be honest.

networkn: Hi So if we didn't get anything via email after registering our interest, we are unable to participate on the beta?

Hi, we've sent out all the invites for now (not everyone got on it). We may do another general round and I'll probably do a smaller dedicated round of invites for GZers.

Quite possibly. Although we use wireless to stream most of our content to the Apple TV (which we do a LOT), and don't have these issues.

But the end result is that in our experience so far, AirPlay is very much a stop gap solution for us. And we have what I'd have considered the "best chance" ecosystem to get this all to work, as its all Apple gear talking to each other.

If you do have any advice to increase the reliability, I'd be keen to hear it.

Related: You mentioned Smart TV apps earlier on in the thread. We have a Panasonic TH-P50ST60Z 50" plasma. Do you know if there are plans for an app for that?

I'd take a look at this (but you probably already did):
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4546?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

Can't give you any details around Smart TV apps (yet). You guys will be among the first to know, though.

If there's no app for my Sammie ............. I'm staying with my Mammy !

Seriously, great to see the enthusiasm here and hope it works well for all concerned. Looking forward to anything that works in a Sammy / Android household.

Why no android? Not everyone has iOS and apple tv, and no I am not going to attach a PC to my tv.
Surely to gain market penetration quickly these days you target iOS and Android at the same time, people will not bother signing up during the peak hype if they cannot use it.

Thanks for the link, but most of that information isn't really applicable. Wifi works, and generally works well. AirPlay often starts well for the first show we watch, but can't be sustained when watching multiple shows simultaneously without rebooting something. At least thats our experience with the NetFlix app. We've not used it any large capacity with any other apps, so it could even be an issue with that particular app.

We also have another annoying issue where our audio slowly gets out of sync (affecting all content streamed to the Apple TV, both via the Internet and our LAN), but thats easily addressed with an Apple TV restart. It takes around 2-3 hours of continuous streaming for that to be an issue, and there are far too many other players in that equation for me to not bother with it for now :-)

i would be interested if
- app for ps3/4, xbox 360/one
- samsung smart tv app (would be nice if there was LG or others as well, not too hard to write these apps to work on more systems)
- android app that worked with remote (so could install on a google tv or similar easily)
ideally if you can get HTML5 video working, then make a good interface then you could reuse that same code for most apps... and support oddles of platforms (tvs, consoles, computers, linux), having it work easily on a HTPC would be great.

but the key thing really is content.  if its just filled with british tv shows like quickflix, then pass, it needs to have a huge back catalogue of stuff (cheers, mash, star trek, supernatural, doctor who, outrageous fortune etc).  also would need to offer different content that is currently on netflix, so perhaps keep an eye on netflix and rotate your catalogue someone influenced by that (im not cancelling netflix, but i might subscribe to two services).

the price is fine IMO.

Ok, I've changed the security settings for the Internet Zone to allow mixed content and the episode now starts playing with no problems - probably related, so might be nothing to see here (except get the mixed content sorted).

Hey, just dipping back to this:

Can you confirm that the problems have gone away?

One issue to consider: DNS/VPN services could impact your performance significantly. If you're having issues, you definitely want try using your ISPs default DNS and disable any VPN.

old3eyes: Looks like a great service but won't be using it until one of the devices I have at home is supported as I don't have a smart TV or want to connect a laptop to the TV / HT amp.  I have an Apple TV, Chromecast, WD TV and TiVo  but  I can't see it ever being on the last two devices though I could cast it from my Chrome browser to my Chromecast..  Changing channels would be a bit of a pig..

you can airplay to your Apple TV. I've been doing that from my iPad. Works great.  (for the kiddies, actually easier for them to select content by touching it too)

I don't have and don't want airplay.

looks like my invite got lost too, but I am excited with the offerings. from what i see though, it looks like it needs a few shows from the CW network, and real NZ content

will still get it but of course everything takes time & money

Because you don't have any other Apple devices?

Why would you not 'want' it?
