Lightbox: Just in case anyone in here is an Outlander fan (yeah, I thought not): The iPad video file for the newest episode isn't working. We're fixing it ASAP and the PC/Mac version works fine.

Thanks for that. Thought Lightbox delayed the episode for some reason.

The episode was remedied at 11 PM last night and works now.

Apologies to everyone waiting for it.

Lightbox - we are online TV.

I signed up for the trial (and the Spark offer) over the weekend and watched a few episodes (of Hustle, Season 6).
iPad to AppleTV Airplay.
Picture quality was fine, and it started nice and fast. I thought there was a bit of audio lag on Episode1, but could just be me, the rest looked fine.

I will say this:
- Audio was OK, but comparing it to UK Netflix (where I watched Seasons 1-5), it is not up there (I have a 5.1 setup, and in 2 channel it got a little muddy, but was still acceptable on LB).
- iPad Airplay really chews the battery on the iPad. One 60 minute episode used about 20% of the battery. Ouch. No binge watching unless I bring the charger to the lounge (I actually set an episode to playing from the bedroom and left it on charge there). They have fixed the issue where the iPad locking would stop the stream, but that fix by the looks of it is the App blanking the screen and not locking (so if you pick up the iPad thinking it is locked and push the home button, it kicks you out of the stream). There must be a way of the stream continuing if the iPad locks, other apps can do it.
- I am impressed with the UI and speed of it - well done to the Lightbox team on that.

I know Lightbox are working on more ways to get it to the big screen - please give this a high priority as even the Airplay method (with the associated battery drain) is not ideal.

I will probably keep the service if they can get me a SmartTV or AppleTV (prefer SmartTV) app. I like it.

I still have an issue with the iPad/AirPlay combination where pausing the stream for too long results in the video no longer buffering once the current buffered portion has been played.

It's probably not an issue, this is more likely a "it's supposed to timeout sometime" normal behavior. Although they could tell us how much time we have before we are flagged as inactive and log us out of the system.

If this is true, it is user hostile behaviour. We often have the need to pause shows while watching them. Currently if we do this with Lightbox we have to:-

1) Pause
2) <activity requiring viewing to be paused>
3) Resume
4) When Lightbox stops playing (usually approximately 1 minute later), exit out of playing episode
5) Select previous episode, as next one will now be selected
6) Play
7) Use scrubber to try and find position we were previously at when playback stopped.

I actually suspect it is more likely to be a bug than as designed behaviour. Pausing playback can not be an uncommon use case, surely?

Ugggghh that's a paaaiiinnn!

Question:
1. How fast is your connection?
I have a VDSL running at 17/3 on DL/UL and I don't have that streaming problem either in the lappy, pc or ipad
2. Which browser do you use?
We use Chrome and firefox and no problems so far
3. Do you have some sort of proxy/vpn?
Usually these softwares redirect traffic and can cause slowdown on streaming.

That is painful. Easily fixed by them implementing a 'Resume where you left off' feature ala. Netflix, so it just asks if you want to resume playing form where you last viewed.

Does Netflix Pause OK? I've never tried it, as I just exit out and know that it will remember where I was.

1. Spark ADSL2 connection, generally around 10Mb/s
2. iPad app with AirPlay to Apple TV
3. Not on the iPad, but I do on the Apple TV. However, I experienced the same when removing the Unotelly DNS settings from the ATV

NetFlix, Hulu, rented iTunes movies, local media streamed via iTunes, all pause and resume without incident.

my guess is it's a bug.  timing out eventually would be expected - maybe 10-15 minutes, but not after just 1 minute. (especially with the lack of easy resume function where it remembers where you were in the episode.

I've just learned to remember the time code where I pause on the assumption it won't work. The scrubbing is actually very fast so it's not a huge deal, just a minor annoyance)

I wouldn't expect it to time out at all. I would expect it to stop buffering if playback stops, but I'd expect buffering to resume again if playback resumes.

Then again, I'd also expect it to buffer without any time constraints, so it could effectively buffer the whole show if you paused it as soon as you started playback (movies rented on the Apple TV do this), but I understand that content providers are far too paranoid to allow this.

Do you mean you only setup UNOTELLY on your devices and not your router?

whuh?  Lightbox doesn't require Unotelly - it's a legitimate NZ service.

(I do actually use unblock-us though - set up on individual devices, not router)

Correct. I only set them up on the devices that need them. Currently that is our two Apple TVs and my laptop (so I can administer our NetFlix/Hulu accounts)

No, but NetFlix & Hulu do. We are currently using all three services.
