Voda tv with 2 month free sky movies

( personally i think 149 for the box is expensive, considering box from ali you can get anywere from 40-80nzd , so heavy markup there )

Sure, but the cheap ali box more than likely arrives pre-bundled with malware. I'd happily pay the minimal extra to avoid.

Sure, but the cheap ali box more than likely arrives pre-bundled with malware. I'd happily pay the minimal extra to avoid.

Its a bit like comparing Apples and oranges,

Vodafone has its unique TV service, Vodafone have their own servers that stream the channels to you.

They also automatically record most shows automatically so you can catch up on them,

also anything you record is in their cloud.

Those cheaper boxes also don't have the proper Android TV OS, they just have a blown up phone/tablet OS/apps.

The Vodafone box is designed to be a mix of traditional broadcast TV and internet.

I have a few of them, and have the live channels app installed along with Matt Huisman's instructions (can't post that link)

However, it's a bit of setup.

Not a bad price for a 4k licensed android tv box though. Once Sky get their ATV offering out, I hope to get rid of Sky.

The VF box takes the work our of it.

I agree. I have the Mi Box S and the Vodafone TV (v2), and stream telly channels on both, using the Matt Huisman's instructions for the Mi Box. The Mi Box doesn't offer the ability to record series or watch a programme from up to 3 days ago that wasn't recorded. Both devices support the TVNZ OnDemand and ThreeNow apps.

In brief the key points and differences are

The Vodafone TV (VTV) is designed for streaming services including available in New Zealand (Neon, Lightbox, Netflix, YouTube, Heihei etc), with the exception of Disney+ but VF are working on adding the service. VTV runs linux (not Android) so doesn't not support chromecast, although Vodafone have created a hack that allows one to cast/control Netflix & YouTube from your phone to the VTV. I haven't used it but do see the Vodafone TV device available when I want to cast YouTube from my phone. 5GHz and Ethernet only. Vodafone provide firmware updates.

The Mi Box allows me to install apps that aren't available in NZ on Google Play, or install the app on my phone and Chromecast it to the Mi Box. Plus it runs some games for the kids. 2.4 & 5 GHz and Ethernet. Xiaomi provide firmware updates.

IMO, if you are buying a device for your grandmother or only want to watch mainstream services that are officially available in NZ (apart from Disney+), the VTV is the one to get. If you want to chromecast or have overseas Android TV apps or a device which integrates with the Google ecosystem then get the Mi Box. I'm happy with both products. I also have a 1st gen Fire TV and a 2nd gen chromecast.
