Am i in the minority here in owning non smart tv's?

I would have guessed less rather than more would own smart tv's so third party media player support would be higher up the food chain than tv apps?

Either way, when the time comes to replace one of our tv's I will most likely bow to peer pressure and buy a samsung tv just to not have to live the "samsung exclusive" issue ever again

I really don't use any smart features on my TV.   I tried them when I got it out of the box, but 99% of the time I just use it as a screen for various HDMI devices.

qyiet: Add me to the Panasonic TV owners club.  Before that it was a Sony.. but I've vowed for the 2nd time never to buy their products again.  (The first time was after the rootkit fiasco.  The 2nd time was the PSN passwords in plain text.   They seem to make nice hardware, but their software is shocking)

Panny here too, same model the smaller one, 42, in bedroom. I can use my iPad to it, or my PS3 to it. Or I could buy a base Samsung BT player wirth Smart hub to be the STB, so there are easy options no matter what devices anyone has or doesn't have.

I'm in that Panasonic owners club also - we have 2 of them (3,4 years old, smart); previously we always bought Sony until I noticed a significant drop in quality.

I'd thought Panasonic was a big brand here as there were always plenty of Panasonic models to choose from. Would be surprised if they were even close to single figure percentage in NZ market sales.

Looking forward to the ChromeCast support.

I'm happy to wait until Lightbox is available on the Roku 3. There's plenty of content to keep me busy on Netflix USA in the meantime. And if they never release on the Roku 3...oh well, I don't think I'm missing out.

No you're not :-)

You can pry my Panasonic Plasma from my cold dead hands. Smart TV capability is very easy to add via external devices (and usually with a far superior UX).

since I don't think you can even buy a Roku box in NZ (other than parallel import) there are probably no more than a few thousand of them in NZ, so barring some kind of special deal with Roku like NowTV did in the UK, it's fairly unlikely Lightbox (or any NZ streaming service) will be developing an app for it anytime soon.

And, since most people who have imported a Roku 3 are likely to have done so for the express purpose of getting Netflix US, t's pretty unlikely they will switch to Lightbox even if they do invest the time and money into launching an app  (as the bolded part of your post proves)

exactly this.  Nothing wrong with buying a Panasonic for it's picture quality, usability etc or any reason like that.

You would only be a 'dork' for buying it if you thought it was going to have superior 'smart TV' usability vs the Samsung.

I have a Sony Smart TV, but because I have an Apple TV and an PS4 connected to it, I do not use the 'smart TV' part of it.  Using the Playstation and Apple TV (depending on what I want to do) is just so much of a better experience.

(main reason I went for the Sony was the ability to easily control my PS3 as a media player using the same remote control. Very handy.)

My Pannys are not smart, the WDTV/Apple TV3 are. Sorted

Forgot, I have a Panny BR/HDD Recorder with Freeview, maybe thats smart too. Never checked.

I have:

  • A Sony Smart TV & bluray player (smart features are too slow to bother with)
  • Xbox 360
  • Xbox One
  • Samsung Nexus 10 (Not Samsung enough for Lightbox, TV3 or anyone else it seems)
All fairly common devices. The nexus is completely stock android managed by Google. Lightbox is available for none of these.

I canceled my Lightbox subscription on the day the android app was announced to be exclusive to Samsung devices. The only conclusion I could draw was that money had changed hands for exclusivity and so my hardware wouldn't be supported any time soon. I've considered buying a ChromeCast at times but of course this won't help me if I can't run the android app. I've no interest in replacing any of the Sony stuff with Samsung gear.

I really liked Lightbox and the content selection looks great. But its no use to me if I can't get it on to my TV. I'll be going with Netflix if nothing changes before they launch.

I'd be very surprised if the xbox(s) and/or sony smart devices weren't next cab off the rank after chromecast.

(presumably with Chromecast, you don't need an android device.  You could just use the chrome browser on your laptop and cast that, right?)

With chromecast does the computer have to connected to router by wired connection?

At the moment plugging computer into TV through HDMI and recieving wirelessy, works perfectly to date but a plain having to unplug computer from TV as want to use it for other things.

Other room PS3 using powerline adapter, as it buffers when on wireless, happy with that set up as PS3 is never moved.

Do have WDTV live but no mention of support coming for that :(, it's always plugged into TV in main room.

At least more effort being put into this then other ventures, like tivo, so they're trying hard. Understand it takes time to get stuff developed, and there's a limited amount money to do stuff, plus once got content need to get to market as fast as possible, which meant product support still needed to be worked on.

It's a shame all TV's are not running the same OS for applications, so when written for one, will work for all.

Exactly, Lightbox - meh. If it becomes available on my preferred device, great, if not it's no big deal. How many streaming services does one need?

Amazon are now shipping Roku's to NZ http://www.amazon.com/Roku-3-Streaming-Media-Player/dp/B00BGGDVOO/ref=sr_1_1?s=tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1425255017&sr=1-1&keywords=roku+3

Neon seems to be going with Xbox 360 first - I had assumed because of its market share compared to the other consoles. What drove Lightbox to pick Sony? Given the way 'exclusive' appeared in all the articles around the PlayStation launch and the way Android was handled I do wonder if Lightbox has some exclusivity deal signed for game consoles.

If chromecast worked from the browser too that might be an option though - a little inconvenient without a laptop but not nearly as bad as the long HDMI cable and all the default audio device switching and monitor unplugging on my PC in another room.

Android devices work that way. And yet the Android app is locked down to select Samsung tablets only.

If there was a common application platform for TVs I wonder if we'd see the same behavior - one manufacturer pays to lock out all the others.

I'm picking Lightbox will turn up on the new Samsung Galaxy 6 soon ...

Like a lot of other I have a smart device (Samsung BD player) but I only use its smart features for TVNZ OD (TV 3 app not available on my model).  That's simply because the app resolution is so much better than viathe TVNZ website.
