There needs to be a follow up to that "legal streaming services" which basically lists all sports or other content types that are available on each service.

That way if you're a fan of F1, Premier League and NRL for example, you can work out it'll cost you $X for various subscriptions to the streaming services to get access. And then cancel sky.

Hiamie: I am totally fed up with sky breaking programmes unnecessary just to advertise upcoming SKY programmes. Totally unnecessary on channels like VIBE and BOX. I recognise that some channels may be relayed from Australia and already have gaps into which SKY can fill with ads, but not on channels that are not relayed from other countries in real time.

Combined with the lack of HD - especially on the documentary channels, I too have already discussed with my wife the option to abandon SKY altogether. For me, I am happy with the price I pay, I just HATE HATE HATE the ads and lack of HD.

Can't see myself being a subscriber much longer.

Yes.  The ads are ridiculous.  I visited my parents' place, and they were watching Alaska The Last Frontier.  The ads came on frequently, and they were the same set of ads for the same set of programmes, every time.  Gold Rush, an especially annoying one about some redneck who made a fortune in fake redneck joke teeth looking to invest his fortune, and some other ones that were more dull than annoying.  It'll be the exact same ads repeated over and over in every ad break for this programme tonight.

I rang up and tried to get them upgraded to a mysky decoder.  What a debacle.  There was an expensive upgrade charge, yet it's supposed to be happening for free.  Of course, new subscribers get it for free.

The latest price increase for the Basic Package is the straw that broke this Camel's back.  Our MySky decoder has sat in the cupboard for the past 5 years since I bought a Vu+ Duo.  The only thing Sky provides me is their Smart Card and the ability to watch the channels I've subscribed to.  A quick tally of the Sky channels from which we've watched or recorded programmes over the past month shows:

  • BBC World
  • Al Jazeera
  • Face TV for various DW programmes

All of these may be streamed online at zero cost.

There have been times where we've really enjoyed our subscription, but they've become fewer and fewer since so many programmes have become available online.  The last event that really gave us extra value was the 2012 Olympics via Prime HD.  When late 2016 arrives, Olympic coverage will most likely again be on Prime in blurry SD, or possibly in HD from some online source.  We ditched Sky Movies years ago and have never had Sky Sport, so neither of those will be missed.  For us, it's just not worth forking out $50 per month any more, so it's goodbye to Sky after an unbroken 20 year subscription.

I think they just assume their customers are like goldfish, and won't recognise regularly repeating patterns

I'm in a bit of a bind. The Rugby World Cup is coming up and I won't be able to go to the pub for all of the games. I like to watch as many as I can, not just ABs. If the Sky Fan Pass app works (and they add RWC games) and games are available on demand I might look at that, otherwise I might have to get Sky on with Sports. I really want to avoid that though, we left them for a reason!

I don't have a lot of faith in their streaming options though.

Would be interested to know what sports content they have picked up that might or may trigger the Sports increase, I hear they are looking into the EPL plus they might carry some of the content that was on Ssommet Sports

I was in the position at my last house where I had to have a Sky Dish to even receive any television at all.
I had the sky subscription for 10 years, it worked well for us and when I found you could save a few dollars by not getting the stupid rag they keep sending out each month I was happier.

Then we bought a new house and I could receive standard Freeview, but got the Sky dish installed anyway.
After 6 months we realised we hadn't even watched ANY Sky content! - We now have a separate dining room and don't/can't watch TV while eating (good I say)
So I rocked on up to the local Sky branch with decoder in hand and said "I want to cancel, thanks", the receptionist said I would have to pay for the rest of the month, fine I said.
That was a year ago, don't miss it a bit.

We hardly even watch any Freeview, I can't even remember the last time I watched normal TV.
Our home has converted to Netflix and Youtube.

News can be had through so many sources now it's not funny (News is mostly depressing anyhow...)

I can remember first seeing Sky and being in wonder and awe at the shows you could see, spent the next two weeks on and off watching the various shows while on holiday and quickly became bored with the content.

Sky should have been moving to the streaming market two years ago, too late guys, you're going to be a minority before you know it.

It looks like ITV have won the rights and will be streaming all matches live, let's hope Unotelly is up to it

How nice will the streaming look?  The convenience of Sky and its box is hard to beat for the RWC, especially for non tech non geeks at home.
BUT, perhaps the churn that doesn't appear to be happening, might happen the day after the RWC final?  I can see many hanging on, then we may see some pricing alternatives for Sky

Beltor: the quality programs are just shifted to a new channel such as Rialto or SoHo as a means of charging additional fees.

Yep, then they justify price increases because of the new channels too.

Sky prices should be rising at inflation rates, which is close to 0 just now.

I bought a tivo to dump sky (and watch sports at the pub or friends), but had to return the tivo as it was not in good condition.

On the lookout again for another tivo

I've got a boxed up one I will not be using. PM me.

The average Sky customer pays around $130 per month.

For $30 per month, you can pick up two streaming services (egNetflix and Lightbox) which would cover the films, TV series and docos on Sky. And you get the added benefit of watching programs of choice (1) when you want, and (2) uninterrupted, ie no more Sky promo ads every five minutes!

So the balance, $100 per month is basically the sport (rugby) premium - the value proposition question is this: Are you happy to pay $1,200 each year ($25 per week) for sport? If yes, stay with Sky, if not, jettison them.
