Found this interesting story, the way I read it is Sky admits defeat and needs to evolve.

about time.

article reads to me like it's a slightly more fuffy version of their upcoming trials.

That's very interesting reading. Should be interesting to see how Sky go fares compared to it's last launch. I do see some of it's online services improving. I suspect as a result of some new blood in the dev team.

Just once it would be nice to have a discussion on an announcement from Sky without all the snide comments.

Can't we all just grow up a little?

Finally the spinoof gets its head around some old news.  I wonder how long it'll take to digest and talk about all the other things in the Investor Day presentation.  Maybe someone will remember this discussion Sky New Zealand Multiscreen TV Experiences ?  That was the announcement of Sky moving to IPTV.

Sky says it expects to have a product out within 12 months (given the track record we'll cue a Tui billboard).  And even pointed out its development timeframe on some of its apps.

The puck looks like a NowTV (Sky UK's rebranded Roku) which was launched in the UK years ago.  The premium STB sounds a lot like the SkyQ box.  Would it be a surprise to see some of the UK's ideas float downunder (albeit with a painstaking delay)?

I'd say the threat of Fetch TV is real so they need to do something, esp with most small towns having fibre by 2022

I don't think they sky should be supplying the hardware though. Most people have smart tvs, ps4s or apple tvs etc.

Maybe this spells the end of the $10 HD fee too?

You mean the information derived from the Sky presentation?  I think that is probably a legitimate source that the spinoof is relying on, but I could be wrong.

Like Sky finally are ?

They're desperate to hold some form of grasp on the NZ market, but too little too late IMHO.

Yes, they'll always be around, but not at the level they have been.

I'm surprised this had not popped up sooner :p
Sky of 3 - 5 years ago is not the sky of today it's just taken some time to sort out the boat. We all know it's a different world these days and some things take time as there are a lot of different parties that all need to agree to things. Should be a fun time ahead :)

Interesting and while I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, Sky has totally screwed these efforts in the past. Having said that, we are soon to be in the post-Fellet era so that could make a difference.

My gut tells me they are going to go aggressively after the entertainment (fully sewing up HBO content and offering Netflix and Lightbox plug ins) and sport will still be horribly overpriced and not attractive to the casual market (the market they claim they are targeting). They will continue with overpriced bundling and may offer OD sporting matches but they will be super expensive. I would really love and hope to be surprised but I doubt I will and the cynic in me thinks there is pressure from sports such as cricket and rugby to get the future viewers onboard with online offerings. Those sports will be at a crises point in the future if this is not addressed. If anyone has used the MLB At Bat app you will know how much more could be done for the major NZ sports...

The other disappointing thing about this is that they want to offer their own box. IMO the initially harder but ultimately better route is to build apps for the devices people already have in their homes. Rokus, Chromecasts, Shields, Apple TVs, game consoles etc. and maybe sell one of those devices direct if you have to rather than adding a new device to the mix. Successful apps are available on all popular devices which makes it easy for people to get on board.
