Sky Television has confirmed is has reached an agreement on a broadcasting deal with the New Zealand, Australian, South African and Argentinian Rugby Unions.

 

The agreement extends its coverage all Investec Rugby Championship, Steinlager Series, Investec Super Rugby, Mitre 10 Cup and all New Zealand's other domestic competitions for five years until 2025.

 

NZ Rugby will take a 5 per cent stake in Sky as part of the deal. Sky spokeswoman Chris Major declined to confirm media reports that the deal was worth $400 million, but said it represented a "record investment by Sky in New Zealand and SANZAAR rugby".

 

Because the deal is worth more than $235 million, shareholder approval will be required for the deal, with a vote to take place at Sky's annual meeting on Thursday.

 

NZ Rugby's decision to take a 5 per cent stake in Sky recognised "the increased alignment and strengthened relationship between Sky and NZR and their mutual support for one another and shared commitment to develop and promote the game", Sky said in a statement to the NZX.

Check their financial reports. Contrary to popular misconception, they are not making outrageous margins on their products. Content is the biggest cost they have. 

 

Are you actually suggesting they lower the wages to their staff? Perhaps off shore the Kiwi Support team? That's gone so well when other companies have done it.

Are you actually suggesting they lower the wages to their staff? Perhaps off shore the Kiwi Support team? That's gone so well when other companies have done it. 

 

 

and that's why I suggest as my first point, to try to negotiate a better deals with other content providers.

 

and yes, they can further decrease their other costs including wages/servicing costs/etc

 

their financial statement is pretty detailed

No, they dont have to get the money somehow. Sky has had the Rugby forever. The financial results from forever ago has always included these rugby rights costs. So actually, very little, if anything has changed. Its only topical as Spark was going after it as well. Yes, its cost a bit more. Sky has been downsizing, they have written off dish assets, goodwill, they have been cutting costs. Subscribers have also been dropping but that will plateau. If it plateaus soon, and I expect it will, then they can tweak stuff to stabilise the bottom line.

lolz. how about restructure to keep fixed cost down, like maybe instead of 10 ppl doing the same job, going to 9, or review bonus schema, or wait maybe less wages for upper management as they already did for CEO? nah, I'm to rational here.

new deal is a cost increase. how it's relevant to the past? new deal, new rules. 

 

 

Has every other rights deal been the same cost every renewal? No. Has Sky occasionally charged extra for a sport? No. You pay one price for a smorgasbord, sports come and go. No domestic cricket to pay thats a small help, didn't have to pay for a RWC that would not attract rugby subscribers as they are already subscribed, thats a help.

 

There wont be a rugby surcharge

So they drop one person, paid, let's say even $30 an hour, and your Sky subscription will drop by....1c a month :) 

 

Your definition of rational is very different to mine. 

 

Check out their books, go ahead and cut the parts you think unfair, divide by the number of subscribers and see if you are happy with the reduction in your monthly subscription.
