Fog:

I can't see a lot wrong with the new sky box either.

Really?

So all or any of the following issues come within your assessment of not "a lot wrong."  Thanks to others who have already made these points, but I don't think it hurts to repeat them here.

1. After deleting a watched recording the 'Delete Recording' is still active and if other recordings are present it is very easy to accidently delete another.  If there are no other recordings after deleting a recording, but recordings are scheduled the active window, 'Delete Recording' changes to 'Cancel Recording' again so very easy to accidentally delete.  This results in deleting an episode that yoou have not viewed yet, or accidentally deleting another episode after deleting an episode, or accidentally cancelling a future recording after deleting the last recorded episode

2. Whilst using FFW/REW/Pause.
Screen Dims (makes it difficult to see especially in dark scenes)
Title of the program is displayed across the screen
Various other icons on the screen eg  "<-Back" display in the top/left of the screen while FFWD/RWNDing is really annoying because it displays over important information such as the scores in rugby
REW hardly ever stops at the point wanted, quite often going back to the position REW started from or some other random position. If you rewind using 4x for just a second or 2 to rewatch something that was just shown that you missed, in many cases        the box will automatically fast forward to the place you started to rewind from.
FFW speed needs fine tuning.2 x 4 x 8 x 12 are more relevant along with a means of getting to specific point in recording - except of course if you have to skip through 2 hours of preamble to get to the halftime highlights!

3. Series Link records everything remotely connected to the series wanted, also series link finding episodes from multiple series even across multiple channels, sometimes episode recorded in multiple parts, sometimes episode is missing end

4. Episodes are listed from newest to oldest, so have to scroll all the way through to get to the episode most likely to view.

5. On the old Sky box you could position into a long recording (golf, rugby) by typing in the number of minutes to skip to in the recording. e.g. Typing 120 would position 2 hours into the recording.

6. When you exit back to the main Planner screen after watching and deleting a recording, the "active box" could be anywhere on the screen, and not visible.

7. The ability to hide channels you are not subscribed to has gone

8. If watching something on Planner that is still recording and you reach the live point it will kick you back to the start.  Particularly annoying if you are several hours into say something like golf and instead of stopping when reaching the live point and letting you resume there, it takes you all the way back to the start.

9.  On some recordings, mainly the TVNZ 6pm news, a few minutes into replay, the picture goes black for a few seconds, and it then resumes playing from around five seconds prior to the black screen. I'm guessing that the box is stitching together the two recordings.

10. The new Sky Box now randomly puts itself into full shutdown overnight. For example, when we turn the TV on to watch Breakfast TV, or the TVNZ News, it turns out that the box was fully shut down, and only starts recording from then. Any other overnight recordings have been missed.

Lets hope that Sky eventually get round to addressing these points.  After all, if there's not a lot wrong it can't take a lot to fix them.

For you battlers that have been with Sky for 20+ years

New Sky Box On Us T&Cs - Sky

  1. This offer is to upgrade to the new Sky Box ‘on us’ (a discount off the one-off fee of $200).
  2. This offer is valid from 1 November 2023 until 30 June 2024.
  3. You are eligible for this offer if you have been a continuous Sky TV customer for 20+ years.
  4. Your offer will be redeemable online and over the phone by contacting us.
  5. Sky Consumer Terms apply.

I’ve been s subscriber for just on 30 years (albeit via Vodafone for about 2 of them), and they never proactively offered that deal to me…..

What they have done is send me an email asking why I haven’t taken up the generous $50 upgrade deal. Due to the terrible interface you had to submit your views through, I was brief, but basically I just pointed out the issues discussed on Geekzone and questioned why I’d drop a Sky+ box that might be old tech…..but actually works.

Last month for the first time in those 30 years…..I started reducing my package from Sky. Frankly haven’t missed the channels I dropped at all yet. …….

Likewise, we have been with Sky continuously since the first satellite analogue service, and before that for a couple of years on UHF but with a small gap due to a change of location. I haven't received that email, but have refused the earlier $50 offer.

Given that the new box is pitched as an upgrade, it beggars belief that they didn't see the MySky box features and functionality as the starting point. Anything less is bound to get the thumbs down from existing users.

I don't have many issues with the new Sky box, alot more options with Andriod and bluetooth remote over old IR is much better for other rooms, over all udpates are being pushed to the device on a regulator basis, just give Sky some time to fix any issues running the box in the real world.

Hopefully Sky is monitoring this fourm and taking note of everyones issues, the problem is that we all don't use the Skybox the same way.

All I am after is the ability of using more than 1 remote control on the device and the option to not put the device to sleep.

Also when an update is applied or the unit has be restarted it doesn't go back to the last channel you were watching!!

Sorted!!

Encountered a new weirdness with my Sky Pod yesterday.

I'd been watching the F1 live. When the race ended, I pressed Pause, because I had to pop out and run some errands.

When I got back, I started Fast Forwarding, to get to the podium thing, then realised that I wasn't bothered. It was fast forwarding at around the minus 40 minutes point.

I pushed the "Back" button on the remote - which I guessed would take me back to Sky Sports 1 live.

Nope. It tuned the pod back to the previous channel that it was on, AT -40 MINUTES ON THAT CHANNEL, AND FAST FORWARDING.

What the heck?

When I switched on my TV this morning, Sky had disconnected my Sky Pod having paid every single account in advance of the due date. I had to re-apply again for a One-Time licence which I have had from the 31st March this year. This company is just so disgusting, they continue to send me emails showing new programmes they are going to broadcast, but having been a long time Vodafone customer, they are simply all repeats as far as I am concerned.

So once again, I turn on the TV to discover that the Sky Box has gone to sleep, and failed to wake up to record breakfast tv from 6am.

The recording starts only when I navigate through profile selection and get to the planner.

On the bright side, fast rewind now no longer covers up the football or rugby scores.

Are Sky secretly pushing updates over night?

It seems we were one of the lucky subscribers who got a SkyPod when the VTV service ended. After more than 6 months of use we've experienced none of the issues described in this topic, apart from needing maybe a couple of restarts, and that's with it connected via Wifi. It's a bit quirky in places, but that's improving and it's vastly better than the old VTV. I can't help thinking that anyone reading this topic might write off the SkyPod, when in fact most of the criticisms relate to the SkyBox. Anyway, we like it.

Similarly I've found the Pod works well for my needs. Main frustration I've posted about before has been the slow fast forwarding which seems to have been improved recently so it works much better now.

Had my first experience of it's portability over the weekend - was out of town staying in a motel and hadn't realised it was the RWC final weekend when the trip was booked. Took the pod with me in case I couldn't get the right channel in the motel, and if worst came to worst I could have just watched via Sky Go on my phone. Turned out the motel room had a basic smart TV but it was not connected to Freeview or Sky, basically could just used Netflix or Youtube. So plugged the Pod into it, but couldn't get on their wifi - it was one where you needed to enter a code in a browser which the Pod couldn't handle so I could connect to the network but not enter the access code anywhere. However, thankfully there was an ethernet cord sticking out of the wall behind the TV which I plugged into the Pod and it then worked via their wired connection - I guess they have this for people taking their own Chromecasts etc. So good to know the Pod can be used anywhere with an internet connection - it is essentially a Chromecast after all.

Where can I complain about the Sky Go app on ipados? I bought a new v9 running ipados 15, now updated to 17.1. On both versions the home menus and the top page of all items display overlapping text and images. Looks very cheap and nasty. IPhone XS max displays fine, and even my old (2010) Sam tab S.
All I get from skynz “technical support” is the obvious restart/uninstall/reinstall which as everyone does, I did before getting on the so called “support” line..
Any ideas on how to get them to fix the app for ipados’s..?
Cheers CD

I've made lots of complains about sky go on Android and IOS but they seem to experience no issues with the app at all. You think the new sky box is better than sky go, think again.

I’m also using SkyGo on an iPhone and an iPad running iOS 17. I’ve had none of the issues you have mentioned.

One thing occurs to me though. On a completely different App, I once had very similar issues, and it was because (on the iPhone) I had adjusted default font size in the accessibility settings. The App developers had not considered this might happen🤔. Might be worth checking this.

just a thought 🙏

Hey bmr63, I did check and it did sort the problem.. Seems like the SkyGo app is not compatible with ipadOS's Dynamic type functionality.. But it is on the iPhone OS..!!

Come on Sky tv get your apps up to scratch...

Cheers for the pointer Steve, love your work..
