To add to the consensus, this new sky box is a heaping pile of crap. We had 5 Sky techs come out to try to get it working, each as clueless as the next. It turns out Sky uses split.io (a feature flag software) on their new boxes and my home PiHole was blocking the domain as it's known to be used for tracking and telemetry. Blocking this domain stops the satellite connection from being verified on the new box. The old boxes would work fine without any interference from internet verification since they would just connect to the satellite directly. P.S. I figured this out myself, the techs had no idea and Sky hides the fact they use split.io

I initially tried to get my parents to move off Sky, but they fell for the same 6 months @ 50% with a new box spiel. So here we are with the new, slow, janky, most un-friendly UI device I have ever had the displeasure of using. Anyone else also notice the streaming quality seems to be absolute crap too? Hopefully, this will finally convince my parents to drop this dying business for good

how many Sky techs does it take to change a lightbulb?

Wow - that’s interesting - but not surprising. What was the domain that needed to be open? I’m using Technitum with my old pihole blocklists but haven’t had the same problem.

The two domains I had to unblock were sdk.split.io and auth.split.io. It's possible there was something else also interfering as I disabled all blocking temporarily while doing a fresh setup. Those two split.io domains also prevented the sky login page from loading when using the mobile app for managing your account

Good to know. Reckon that will make it in the FAQs? … I doubt it. At least people might search and find the GZ forums for an answer.

Cheers

It's probably best you don't block split.io. It's a fairly common way to incorporate feature toggles. Not only Sky (apparently), but also in other apps that you might be installing on the platform (eg Netflix, TVNZ+, and likely others as well).

So Sky clearly aren't using split for any of the fancy features that are claimed for TVNZ.

Their User Interface has barely changed in the year since it was rolled out and is still as useless as ever. No slomo, no ability to skip to a time in a long recording, etc etc etc. if they're doing a/b testing with their tame users, they're obviously not using the information for the good of all users.

I guess we shouldn't be surprised.

Thank heavens for wireless ADB, and bluetooth, and the ability to sideload some decent apps that are mysteriously not available in the Playstore.

Never had an issue with Pi-hole and the new sky box. Just checked my Pi-hole logs and don't see those 2 addresses at all. I don't run any extra lists just the defaults.

I've decided to jump on the free sky box deal from old MySky Pace box. Set up was as expected, did all the updates. Skipped the google stuff since TV has android TV. Everything's been working well no issues, only thing I noticed is that it always turns on to SkyGo homescreen, once I press the TV icon on right it goes to the channel I was watching when I turned it off. Just my 2 cents, hopefully we get 4K olympics or are we dreaming!

You skipped the Google stuff since it has Android TV? What were you expecting to do with Android TV without signing into your Google account?

My mistake, what I meant here was that existing TV (Sony Bravia) already has android TV built-in where im all logged in to all the apps/Netflix, TVNZ+ etc, so didnt need to log in to google stuff on new sky box. :)

I've only read the last few pages of this thread but I think my intended question - 'Should I get the new box?' - has been answered. I can see no advantage in switching, indeed, there may be several disadvantages, seeing as the old MySky setup does everything I want and I don't need any extra dramas tuning new equipment.

BTW, what's the story if the old MySky boxes break down? Are replacements available?

My father in-laws old one broke we asked for the old type and got sent one, the most challenging part was explaining it to the offfshore contact centre

I decided to bite the bullet and upgrade to the new android sky box. I was delaying upgrading as I use a Harmony all in 1 remote that controls the AV receiver TV and sky box.

Luckily the new remote does pretty much the same. I press the power button on remote which turns the tv on and the volume and mute buttons control the receiver.

Just getting my head around the new sky format.
