For me I've only ever had minor issues/complaints. HDR used to be always on, not adaptive. this setting has now been updated. The odd recording hiccup, but nothing like my brothers box that used to divide recordings up into 10/11/12 upto 15 x 10min chunks etc.

The UI can be slow etc not recognize remote inputs, then all of a suddon boom they all happen.

Is it perfect? no, but is anything?....lol.

It may be still hit and miss box by box but for me its been 95% fine, and would say its fine for most people on here.

Would I reccomend it to my parents (over 70's), NO.

Thanks for the feedback. Keen to hear of anyone elses experience.

I don't want an unresponsive UI and I don't want unreliable recordings as the only reason to have sky is for sport.

I have 3 of the full new Sky boxes. Experience is incredibly painful - still. Have had them from day0.
Like anything - you tend to work around deal with the issues/avoid them but its painful at times.

  • On our new Frame TV - lots of issues with HDMI sync where Sky box just wont show up. Have to effectively reboot the TV or reboot the Sky box. Most painful issue.
  • UX is still slow. Slow to the point that we dont use the TV guide as it takes forever to browse through.
  • Recordings will occassionally get messed up for no reason. Sit down to watch the news later in the evening and find that the recording doesnt even play. Give up and use TVNZ on demand.
  • Remote is stupidly sensitive to the point that one slight touch causes it to change the channel etc.
  • Ocassionally the box just locks up - requires hard reboot
  • Occassional end up with just a blue screen (not like Windows) but just blue - requires a hard reboot.

Overall - still painful!

So, what is the state of the new satellite/streaming box? Is it ready to replace my older satellite box yet, or still rubbish?

From what I’ve read here, the old HD based box is more predictable, more reliable and basically just works. The Sky rollout of the new tech has been hopeless. My older HD box died last Xmas and they tryed to get me to “upgrade”. I didn’t, and the newer version of the HD Box is actually a bit more responsive.

For me, the turning point MAY be in 2025 when Sky MIGHT start offering 4K sports coverage. The old boxes certainly won’t handle that.

So I’m waiting see what happens.

Steve

On the 4k point, I got the attached email from Sky today... Be interesting to see how it works this weekend.

I just signed up for SSN to watch the tour of Sri Lanka. I swear the quality has somehow manager to decline from the last time I had it. The grass in cricket generally used to have some definition as it's a pretty slow moving sport. Here it is today as a blocky and pixelated mess. What an absolute joke Sky are providing this "product" in 2024.

The most bizarre thing is the ads seem to all play at a much higher bitrate/fps.

There are a number of versions of SSN.  Mine is on a 2018 Samsung 4K-capable TV (so the Tizen version),and I am on a 300/100 fibre connection with a WIFI6 connection to the router.  So which  platform are you using for the SSN app?  What is your internet connection details and what is the WIFI capability of your app device (ie TV, phone or tablet) (if it is WIFI-connected)?

My Sky Box, which is apparently 1980's tech, is just that. MySkyHDi. The only issues I have are:

  1. If its recording 2 programs it can be a teeny bit laggy. 3 Programs its quite laggy. But the viewing experience on a past recorded, or recording, or live is fine
  2. Rarely I want to watch streaming, i.e. On Demand. Always it wont work, as its lost or hasn't kept up to speed with the DHCP, so I  power cycle it, sorted. I "assume" if I watched Sky OnDemand more frequently it would probably be ok.

End of the day, my value is viewing, and I get that every day

I've got the same internet plan and wifi connection, I run it off 2nd gen Apple TV. I do have a Sony android TV that's a couple of years old but in my past experience that had the same issue so I haven't bothered trying again this time...

Hmmm - The Sky rugby 4k channel doesn't have ads :D
Still can't tell the difference between 1080 and 4k, but like the no ads :)

Switching between normal Sky Sports 1 and the UHD channel, there is absolutely a difference. Looks much sharper, there’s more detail there. It’s most notable in faces.

Massive difference between the two!
Much clearer picture - sharper!

Picture is much better and clearer on the UHD channel
Did notice that the picture froze and went black once and the signal dropped out on one of their cameras for 1-2 seconds after the haka.

Regards tonights uhd channel test- i have 4k tv and most of my viewing is either original or scaled 4k, appletv, media server or oppo bluray. I didn’t see the advantages in quality on the sky feed that i have seen on other media when comparing uhd to fhd. So it was a bit underwhelming actually. But since it is streaming I suppose there are some limits. And even the new sky box is not up to playing back 4k content locally to start with.
It would have to be much better for me to think about paying for the additional content, which I assume is where sky is going with this. Cheers CD

My brilliant piece of technology now has a "updating software, please wait" message on screen. It's never been the same since LNB was replaced, i.e., when switching from AppleTV to white box it will 90% of the time display no signal message and requires channel change to get signal back. Never did that before LNB failure.
