When signing up for Sky at the moment do you need to pay for the current box?

No its free, and its still free going forward. Only the new box is $200

I have an apple tv so there is zero benefit in me having the new box when the free one does everything I need of it.

Likely because the current box you get, isn't new and has been paid for many times over.

This is a new investment.

Current Kaon box doesn't support upcoming 4K H.265 satellite services as was a budget replacement for the old 1998 designed mpeg2 decoders. After a 3 year rollout the new box will have greater significance.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Are you referring to the new box or the old black ones? I would like some system specifications on the new white ones preferably H265 HEVC video playback

I just phoned Sky for an update on my pre-ordered Sky Pod.

Apparently they are due to be shipped by the 28th of this month..... but I will believe that, when I see it turn up at my door!

Also they have a dedicated team for VTV customers with almost no queue available on: 0800 759 190

H.265 is current mature technology so new box will support it, H.264 is now 20 years old.

New boxes say it’s Android powered so effectively a “skin” on Android TV like the Chromecast with Google TV which sells for ~$60-80 NZD.

So added functionality is -
Recording which you have to pay an extra $15 pm for anyways
Ability to watch feeds via satellite

Does the full store exist to load any app for Android TV from Google Play?

Is it just me or is it really really hard to justify moving to this “new” box.

What else does it provide of value?

Don't worry us Vodafone subscribers are used to crappy call centers that never answer or have no clue about solving issues. We will feel right at home!!!

Why?, History shows Sky do everything with minimal bandwidth, but further any streaming service will very unlikely give you a 4k feed that gets much north of 15Mb/s, so why the need for a GigE interface, simply makes no sense or of any use.

Gigabit Ethernet network appliances and devices can transfer data packets at rates much faster than Fast Ethernet. A Fast Ethernet switch can transfer data packets at a rate of 10 megabits per second. A Gigabit Ethernet switch transfers data packets at relatively higher speeds of one gigabit per second.
