sub3:

I was using two Vodafone TV devices and had pre-ordered two Sky Pod devices. I'm going to call Sky today and cancel.

I was never feeling great about the move, and now with National Geographic going, and TVNZ channels not being integrated in with the other channels, it's just pushed me over the edge. I wasn't watching a whole lot of live tv any more, but those were two channels I'd watched fairly regularly. Most of our watching these days were on-demand services like Netflix, Disney+ etc.

I'm going to move our couple of LG TVs over to Freeview HD via antenna for live tv, and continue to use Netflix/Disney+/Neon, and save myself the $80 per month.

Everything I have read screams at me to do the same.

Exit Sky as a platform, get my aerial sorted for terrestrial/linear TV and use streaming platforms off my Apple TV and Chromecasts around the house, while maybe subscribing to SKY Sport Now during the football season.

I already subscribe to Neon, Prime, Netflix, D+, ATV+ : might as well go the whole hog and ditch my $100+ per month Sky sub. doesn't feel like a great use of my money in a cost of living crisis.

I've always liked my Apple TV, and I'm also tempted to move over to Freeview and a collection of streaming Apps, even though I'd lose access to a few things I currently watch, and jumping in and out of Apps to try and find what I'm looking for can get frustrating.

I've got the Freeview channels working on my Apple TV now, so I wouldn't need an aerial.

I need to decide quickly whether I'm going to cancel the Sky Pod order, or whether I just wait for a bit and maybe trial it for a month, then cancel Sky and re-subscribe to some of the other streaming services if the Sky Pod is as bad as it sounds.

Been trying to find the Freeview app for the Apple TV but has been removed, the only Freeview app I can get is the one for the Panasonic TV

I have to make a decision on this soon as I move in a little over a month. I like the Supercars and F1, but could get Sky Sport Now and F1 Pro and save a bunch on what I'm paying now. We'd lose Cbeebies but I'm sure I can find YouTube channels with In the Night Garden etc. Other than that I mostly watch Disney+ and Netflix so I'm not sure what Sky is really giving me atm, other than a $200 combined bill for the pay TV and the internet I have with them.

Senecio:

We have a VTV box on our main TV. Have not subscribed to Sky since we ditched satellite back in 2018. The only live linear TV that we watch is the nightly news and we normally have a breakfast / AM show on in the background while getting ready to go out to work. I'll be disappointed when the VTV box is finally killed off but for little live linear TV that we watch we will just switch to using the TVNZ+ & Three streaming apps on the ATV 4K. I have no interest in going back to satellite nor installing a terrestrial antenna on the roof.

You don't always need to install an outdoor antenna, you can still get the good old indoor bunny ears type. Just plug in do a scan and hide the thing behind the tv

Yes the Freeview unified app disappeared some time ago - quite some time ago, in fact.

Now it's a matter of using the various streaming apps for the networks and channels that have them, or use a Freeview capable satellite or UHF delivery method.

Does ATV not have a live TV feed / app like Android TV does that Matt Huisman's links can be added to for live streaming?

I use the iPlayTV app to get the Freeview channels on Apple TV.

It's not an "official" way to get Freeview so it could stop working at some point I guess, and you do have to configure it to get the channels, but it works OK once you've got it set up.

There are a few generic IPTV apps out there you can get to work with an ATV, i haven't bothered because I've got an HDHomerun.

I've been using the new Sky box and the pod for about five days now. I had been using VFTV via cable right back to Saturn days when I moved to a cabled area in 1997.

For us, the box and the pod are fine. We like to record stuff off a number of Sky channels, as well as recording things off TVNZ channels - and stream TVNZ+ and Netflix.

For us, they are a perfectly adequate replacement for the VFTV boxes we had, with the bonus of not having the irritating schedule recording bugs that the VFTV boxes had.

I know that most folk here seem to be a bit more "exotic" in their streaming methodology than vanilla me - but for me, this solution is fine.

Thanks. We are 6 x VFTV connected to some dumb and smart tv's both home and at our holiday house where we spend a lot of time. We have a few smart tvs now and I was considering not connecting a box to them and use only streaming APPS. Especially if the new boxes were glitchy.

We have similar watching profile to you - become more streaming than FTA or Sky shows but the older family members not ready to ditch Sky News channels or recording yet. Younger ones in their 20's don't watch any free to air or news programs at all! Had a 21 year old come back from his engineering degree last week and say he was doing a project for Bremworth carpets, 'Apparently there was a problem with their factory in Nelson due to weather.....' I kid you not, he had no idea there was an issue in the BOP.

Yeah, some of the younger members of my family have been equally unaware.

After 26 years of cable TV, I was very resistant to getting a dish (it felt like sacrilege) but now it's up - I just don't seem to care that it's there.

My wife and I come in from work, have tea, watch the recording of the news from TV1, then maybe a Father Brown recording off UKTV, then maybe stream Ghosts or Sheldon or Outrageous from the TVNZ+ app. I might possibly watch a bit of an F1 recording from Sky Sport. Or we could get something off Netflix.

My point being that we can do all these via the Sky box, with very few pushes of buttons on the remote. For US, it's a one-stop solution.

As always, YMMV. :-)

We are getting to grips with the new box. The only problems we have had is with recording, and on three occasions the recorded programs have cut out

before reaching the end. Anyone else had this problem.? I guess they are working on this but it is a pity the box was released onto the market before

it was fit for purpose.

I haven't observed this yet, but I have noticed that a couple of recordings say that they are partially recorded. I'm wondering if they are doing a fair number of updates. I should take a photo of the software version screen (assuming that there is one) so that I can compare from one day to the next.

We now run a recorded program to the end to make sure it is complete before watching it. Not very satisfactory but necessary if watching a crime program.

I guess it will be sorted but will we be told when updated and the problem is solved. The only reason we got the box was because of the recording facility.
