What is the select button? is that the OK button?

it says select on the middle button of the remote and it works , it may be a bit slow to respond but it works

The SKy remote works out of the box (on RF) some buttons I need to press a couple of times to work and everything a message pops up asking to press (CH+) + (OK) which is rather annoying!!

Looks like a new update is available for the OS!
I manually check everyday (even though I know it’s automatic)

Installing now … oo the excitement lol!

Platform version was previously 1.1.0 - https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=106&topicid=300614&page_no=76#3075649
Platform version from this update (22-05-2023) is now 1.1.3

Will have a look to see what (if anything) has been visibly changed. Since its platform - its the base OS level so likely bug fixes at that level as opposed to anything UX since those are handled via the launcher updates.

I assume this is the Sky Q remote. If so it arrived fast.

You probably have to press those keys after starting pairing on the Sky Box. Also yo may need to click on OK selecting the name of the remote during the pairing process. Onve it is paired you should see the name of the remote on screen along with that of the original Sky remote.

If you install Button Mapper from Apps you may be able to fix most problems with the remote, just don't change navigation or select buttons to something else as you may have to reset the Sky Box if you do this.

No, it's not the Q remote, it is another Sky remote (white)

Yes, same here. It wasn’t notifying me about an update, but as soon as I went into the about>system update menu, it downloaded the 1.1.3 update without further prompting (or “do you really want to do this” message).

Still looks the same, hope they’ve been taking notice if our feedback somehow. I’m still hovering on the 50/50 whether I will keep or send back. Some days I share your optimism and think it can only get better. If I didn’t already have a smart TV or had known what the old box did, I would think this one was pretty fancy.

But then the thing freezes for a few minutes and I’m ready to chuck it out the window (it’s not the remote that stopped, because it had stored all my button presses to dump all at once when it finally came alive again). Not to mention trying to find out what’s recording ‘right now’. And it may be able to record 5 things at once (haven’t tried) but it can’t do much else while its recording just one thing. Or trying to get back to live program from paused playback (I can’t see how they can fix a button omitted from the remote with a firmware update), or determine that its actually on playback from the lights on the box. That was kinda handy on the old box (sigh).

Anyway, still persisting with it, for today at least.

It would be good to see some changelogs from Sky with the new fixes etc.

Just for piece of mind

I’ve not worked in R&D but have been in retail for over 50 years. Ouch! 😀 I always thought if you updated a product it should be better than what it replaces but I’m still on the fence with this new box. I’m getting used to it but with the old box we used to record Newshub and start watching it around 6.30 while it still recorded. Seems like this new box won’t let me, sigh.

We have been away for a week and just back home to our setup. Sadly I forgot you can’t record and watch from the start so got two segments but neither was from the start. I’m stumped.

To be fair, most of the complaints in this thread seem to be mainly unfounded "I hate all change and want the old ways to remain forever" posts.

And yes, I acknowledge there's plenty of old people who truly think this is a valid complaint to make.

However, this is a work in progress that most people are moaning about before the first major update is ready, and returning it because of some very bitter negative reviews here.

As the old saying goes "you keep learning until the day you die" applies to the new sky box, just as everything else,

I have to wonder if some of these posters would prefer to go back to VHS rentals from Video Ezy (aka Video Sleazy) ?

For the nattering naysaying nabobs of negativity out there, why not make yourself a cuppa, put on MTV80s and relax for a while ?

After all, Sky is going to do a major update in a few weeks time, and there is plenty of good TV out there rather than what's on Jones or Jones Too.

There's no point stressing out and giving it up because some halfbaked naysayer told you the new sky box will never get better.

Let's face it, being pessimistic for no reason other than to bring other people down is rather sad in itself.

If some people don't want to enjoy what's on Sky TV, then don't tell others that they can't enjoy what's on Sky TV because you don't enjoy it.

Nice bit of philosophising there. I'm sure Sky will be so moved that it is seized by guilt and refunds all the unintentional beta testers.

True that, I'm beginning to feel like a beta tester and paying Sky for the privillage !!

When you pay for a device, it should work properly from the minute you plug it in. No one pays for the hours the consumer has to muck around trying to adjust it.

If it doesn’t work properly don’t sell it. If you want testers, give it away for free and don’t charge a sub until it’s working as it should.

Dont agree with this. Many here are open to change and wanting to use the new devices - emphasis on use. The issue is that there are a ton of bugs and general issues with these devices which makes it challenging.

Most of us will and have come up with workarounds and that will suffice for now but it doesnt make it right that the devices have several issues. There are some issues where no workarounds are possible.

Sky should of done a ton of beta testing on these for their UX which is where it seems that most issues sit. The underlying Android TV platform is sound - been around a long while now and works incredibly well. I have multiple Chromecast with Google TV devices and have zero issues with them. Sky's implementation of the launcher is the issue.

While I dont care as much but I am sure others do - For a service that customers are paying for us and a decent amount for - the service from Sky should and needs to be 100% better than what it is. Their helpdesk is quite frankly useless. The content on their support pages is the same. Its near impossible to ring them so most dont bother so the customer just has to put up with it.

On the plus side - its encouraging to see them releasing updates reguarly - in the last couple weeks, the launcher (their main UI) has been updated a few times and the underlying platform updated once. The launcher needs a ton more work so its likely to take another good 6+ months before we see the annoying bugs and other issues ironed out. I wish they would bring on more resources and move quicker to address these!

This is a retail device being sold to customers it is not a beta device. Selling a device that is "work in progress" without clear notification that this seems to be the case is not good and probably  contrary to consumer protection law. Do you buy a TV, Car, Watch etc as work in progress? no you don't. This product is clearly not being sold free of defects as prescribed in the Consumer Guarantees Act and therefore seem be in breach of consumer protection law.

As for your ageist comments and other jibes towards members of this community, these  are uncalled for, rude and probably fracturing the FUG.
