In the latest Foxtel e-newsletter they're already promoting (and taking registrations) the Winter Olympics next year.  I hope this is a pre-cursor to what we'll be offered and a strong message to Sky to start promoting a marque event.

Starting February 13, 2010 this extraordinary event will be coming to your place, direct from the FOXTEL studio in Vancouver.

Broadcasting on 4 channels in spectacular HD, you will be able to see:

Over 340 hours of live events
Every gold medal event live and in full
Every competing Aussie live and in full

Sound good? Then go to foxtel.com.au/vancouver2010 for updates, special offers and much more.

Under the heading "No Premium"

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=10580747&pnum=3

Summary: foxtel charging an extra $50 premium for extra four channels. Sky new zealand will put on extra channels but will be the normal sports package charge. Plus 12 hours a day on Prime.

I am hoping that Prime and Skysport 3 will become HD that way they have 4 HD channels showing the Games

I understand that Sky Sport 2 may "downgrade" to SD during the Olympics so I imagine that Sky Sport 3 will remain in SD.  The Olympic channels will probably be reallocated from PPV movie channels.

And the original plan was to put the Prime coverage in HD (from the HD launch party last year) and its in Sky's latest Annual Report but they could always change their mind....

could you post a link to the report about Skysport 2 being downgraded please, all I have seen is speculation, also Sky have already said there will be no additional charge so why use PPV channels? Optus D3 is being launched on 18th Aug. After that Sky has room to expand

Details of SS2 downgrade have been seen in at least 2 different sharebroker reports.  So no direct link or statement by the company that I can recall.

Use of PPV channels is more about capacity.  Rather than using all of 201-214 for PPV I'm guessing they'll just rebadge and give access to Sports subscribers (or Olypmics "ticket" holders).  I'm going to wait until closer to the time before beleiving that I wont be paying anything extra to see the event.

As for D3 capacity, agreed that they could just use that but I'm not sure how many homes will have the dual-throat LNB's installed (and or any additional cabling) and whether that they'll be able to serve all homes by Feb 2010.  Summer Games in 2012 might be a different story.  Maybe more technical minds can shed some light.

They haven't done any additional cabling at my place, so once D3 launches I guess they're still stuck on one satellite. Got HDi installed within month came out and don't think the new cables had arrived then.

Guessing it's not just a few days to do all the ground work, so will still be months after 18 August until able to use D3

problem is most setups still have the dual throat single output LNB's which means you can use D1 or C1/D3, so is really not a goer.

Taking a few of the PPV movie channels makes sense really. I have always maintained that 14 PPV movie channels is overkill and a waste of bandwidth. Especially when MySkyHDi becomes more common, then you can just get the stuff you want on demand anyhow.

I'd be annoyed if they made you pay extra for Olympics.

I think most if not all new e.g. My Sky & HDi had the dual LNB added and also all Tech. call outs so anyone with an HDi should have access to D3 and most My Sky also.

If I go to channel 999 with hdi I get atmospheric conditions message now, not sure what happening there, but use to get a constant tone, and a thing like teletext pages on the screen with the mysky1
