Not everything is in Sky's or any other broadcasters hands. The broadcaster of the channel has to initiate the change. So I think blaming a NZ broadcaster for a overseas based and run channel is highly unfair.

Depends. As Sky NZ piggybacks onto Foxtel in Ozz for these channels and as Foxtel in Ozz does both Discovery and Natgeo in HD then there's no excuse this site of the Tasman for not seeing it here in HD..

You misunderstand how the HD versions of Nat Geo, Discovery, ESPN etc. would be delivered. Sky would receive 45 Mbps feeds over fibre and feed these to H.264 encoders (output around 15 Mbps) and onto satellite. Given Sky have no such fibre feeds there are no such channels on the Sky satellite transponders.

The SD versions also arrive in NZ independent of Foxtel.

EDIT: Fellet had been negotiating with both Discovery and Nat Geo, re: showing HD version + an SD version of the HD feed (replacing current SD feed) on Sky. Whether there was any outcome I don't know.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Handsomedan: There surely has to be enough interest in football now to warrant a dedicated football channel? I'd pay for it.

yeh i agree, try and get as many football matches especially from la liga, italian league and german leagues along with epl. hopefully all of them in HD too id pay 20$ for that itself. Think world cup 2010 would be in HD which should be good.

ESPN HD
More international sport on Sky Sport (they seem to have cut back on this)
Sky News and Sky Sport on demand/active

More Sky channels in HD

More channels in 16:9

Yes, especially as Sky block you from subscribing to Setanta Sports, which show lots of football.  Most of it Sky don't show either.

Agree about the more international sport.

The only time they show cricket on TV is if NZ or AUS is playing. :(

It would alos be fantastic if they started offering more international tv channels for an extra fee of course.

I think atm all they offer is a few channels from Chinese TV. Need more channels from other countries.

How do Sky block Sentanta Sport?

All you need is an appropiate dish for D2, STB that does irdeto and a contact in Australia to get the card delivered to.

it's exactly what I did.  A few months ago I got a letter from the people who manage this (a third party) stating my subscription has been terminated immediately, as they are no longer permitted to broadcast in to NZ.

I rang them up, and the guy pretty much said that Sky had kicked up a stink about cross over of rights.  I'm still p_ssed off really, as I subscribe to Sky anyhow.  There is a tiny cross over with rugby content, and some soccer (FA Cup mainly) which got Sky on the war path.

It was good while it lasted though.

:edit:  re-read your post.  Yes, I can still do it via that way, but the legit path has been removed by Sky.  Can't be bothered deleting the rest of my post.

NonprayingMantis: If more channels go HD I would definiutely need a hard drive upgrade.

If all the crap my wife has on series link becomes HD there will be no room for the good stuff I like to watch.

Recording a FTA HD movie takes up absurd amounts of space at the moment - mostly because the ads seme to meant the movie lasts 20-30% longer than it would on Sky Movies.

Sky is launching a external HDD they are currently working on the name for marketing.

Where did you hear that?
