I even dont like sky's feed of discovery channel in sd, reason being there are usually 2 min short doccos discovery will show in between programs and sky overwrite these with their box office adds and other junk advertising harvey normans and telecom etc... used to be called "discovery moments", sometimes they show previews of up comming doccos too "discovery preview" but NZ never gets to see an of that because sky overwrite all of it with rubbish of their own.

All the discovery channels inc HD are on Intelsat 8 c-band and are encrypted, how would a subscription be obtained? I have looked for info but cant find anything.   I already have the nessesary equipment to receive the beam, just need a subscription, wheather they sell to NZ I dont know?

You could do it by signing up in one of the countries that bird covers, but given that you'll be imorally circumventing every regional broadcasting law in existence, as well as breaking the terms and conditions of whichever host broadcaster you sign up to, you may as well just go down the easy path and get them from bittorrent television, in HD, with Dolby Digital sound. No condoning it by any means, but it'll be much much easier...

As an individual you cannot subscribe direct with Discovery. You can only subscribe through a TV service provider.

I'm sure you won't have the several hundred thousand dollars are year these channels cost. :)

so Discovery HD is actually available to them? They complain about HD uplink capacity, but yet seem unwilling to do anything about it.

It is available to Australia, Sky would have to negotiate for the channel, though Sky has said it would like a sim cast HD channel not a stand alone, that way it could just overlay the channel number like all other HD channels.

have a look at this website

Scroll down to "4080 V"

There we have available to NZ:

Discovery Science Channel Australia & New Zealand
Discovery Home & Health Australia & New Zealand
Turbo Australia & New Zealand
Discovery HD SE Asia

Because they are labled New Zealand and SE Asia, one would think these channels are available to NZ, either directly from Intelsat8 or thru a paytv provider like Sky, but trouble is sky only carry plain old Discovery SD and there is no other option or another provider to go thru to get these.

Here all the channels available on Discovery

Most of those channels are not available, hence the downloading of torrents by a lot of people, so much for the copyright rule the govt is trying to bring in, if they made more content available legally then there wouldnt be so much downloading of copyright material.

Sky are running a web survey about online content, asking questions about our online viewing habits.. At a few points during the survey the free text boxes, I wrote I am uninterested in paying for any online content and for them to deliver more HD channels and HD content than an initiative of purchasable online content.

My opinions and ideas expressed in posts are solely my own and do not reflect the views of my employer in any way..
