Let the whingers whine...................... and cancel their subscriptions. Who is going to care?

I am pretty sure some "whingers" consider your choice of programs "crap" as well. It goes both ways.

Yup got the feeling this is going to go the same way as several other sky conversations as of late.

Like that will every happen. You can't even see trailers most of the time. The NZ content providers would do all they can to block it and SyFy would say it's a licensing thing..

well i'm not sure if it is legal or not. but wouldn't a usa based vpn allow you to watch syfy on their website?

Shouldn't have to jump thru hoops to get the content that you wish to watch. Sure I could google it on how to set it up, but is it really worth the hassle ? What about those that are sci-fi fans, but not techno-geeks ? Should they go thru the rigmarole of setting up a USA hosted VPN service. Woud they even know how to, even with half decent google instructions ?

However, convergence is a-foot, will be interesting to see what next year brings. Google TV, Apple TV being revamped, etc.

Not sure of the legailty (and really, would you expect any law based system to be able to keep up with the fast pace of technology? I mean, it's still 'illegal' to rip DVD's in NZ even for personal or backup use, yet we have already moved beyond that technology and well into Blu-rays etc), however I have tried it, with a package that allowed both US and UK services, so I tried Hulu and the BBC iPlayer.

Hulu was really good, and usually fast enough to allow streaming of content without buffering, and the range of shows is quite different from here (Woody the Woodpecker is always fun!), but the BBC content was slooow, thank god the iPlayer software allows you to download content to play back latter as it was not possible to watch online.

However, this solution is not 'consumer' friendly; you cannot plonk yourself on the couch in front of your large screen TV, press a couple of buttons and start watching, there is usually a lot of steps to got through (establish VPN, start application, sign in, find program, click to watch) all of which are geared around the keyboard and mouse.

To me it's not so much being able to access the content, it's being able to do so in a way that Joe Bloggs can do, or the wife without having to phone me and ask what input the TV needs to be on and which remote to use. That's where MySky HDi is great - it is consumer focused and easy to use.

Sure, you can download or develop a solution, but it's still easier for 99% of the population to just 'watch TV' and Sky know this, so won't do anything about it, for SiFi or any other channel they don't deem profitable.

And if anyone is in any doubt as to the practices of Sky and Co, consider this:

In NZ you cannot go to Itunes store and pay to download an episode of your favourite programme.

The reasoning being that they first need to give NZ content providers a good several years to milk as for as much as they can.

So there you go; continuing to support such a unconscionable foreign near-monopoly as Telecom (oops I mean Sky) isn't really helping any of us.

So Apple is concerned for NZ content providers but not Australian, British or US content providers?
Thats extremely magnaimous of them. I'm sure that the regional monopoly providers Foxtel and Austar in Australia must be very very annoyed.

Going by this statement and their line up, this looks like no loss at all. Would be nice if Sky chucked a few more sci-fi shows into the general mix though

The reason SciFi channel was renamed SyFy was so that they could move away from SciFi programming to lowest common denominator junk..
