Of for those good with a screwdriver, open up your My Sky HDi box, remove the 160GB hard drive, and drop in a 2TB drive. :-)

This will void your warranty of course, and probably cause cancer in rats.

Warranty? You do not own the MYSKY HDi, Sky does. If you damage the MYSKY HDi you are liable to pay Sky all damage costs, even if you paid the $599/$499 one of fee.

I'm not fully across all the T&Cs of a Sky contract, but beyond having to pay damage costs I guess Sky could also refuse to  continue to provide services to someone who messes with their kit.

tdgeek: ---Boy they are getting greedy! What they should be doing is dropping the price of the standard model (as it would have dropped over time!!!) and putting these + ones in at the current price.

Sorry Sky - your greed is starting to get a bit much.---

Really? maybe they should just keep it simple and make all users buy it up front for $649, then you cannot say they are greedy.

Is this greedy too? "It is even better. I currently have a silver MySky and a Black MySkyHDi that I paid the $649 for. They tell me that for my $150 I will get to replace my silver MySky with MySkyHDI+ and keep the MySkyHDi"

What's this "buy" you refer to?  Even if you pay $650, they still own the darn thing, it's a lease.

Just to confirm...
To watch the RWC in 3D, will I need to upgrade to the MySky + box? Or will my MySky box + Sky Sport + HD ticket option work just fine? (Assuming I've picked up a 3D TV by then...).

Saw in fine print, in skywatch, meant for time shifting not permanent storage. If supplier of program wants it time limit on how long recording can be kept for.

I've taken up to 6 months to watch movie, wander if to cover themselves or will be enforced.

Also it had with on demand to rival the amount new releases in video store, guess they're gonna use a bigger amount of drive space for themselves.

Is there enough quality programming on SKY to warrant a 640GB HDD ?

Sad..they could just enable the usb port in the back and allow you to hook up an external HD. I'd have to check ....but I could have sworn I even saw an external eSata hookup in/on the back of the unit.

Wild to think Bell ExpressVU (in Canada, heck even Rogers allows external HD hookup to their STB's)allows extra storage to be added to their STB's via the usb external HD. Most shocking of all Bell didn't charge the customer to enable the USB port (Bell enabled the ports about 12-24 months ago..for free on units that had them).

This feels like  pure %100 cash grab....nothing stopping them to enabling that usb port...except sucking this "upgrade unit" out of me.

You're right: using the USB or eSata ports should have been SKY's first move, and it was. Unfortunately, because the MySKY box runs a very proprietary middleware and UI software stack, the cost to enable the ports for recording was prohibitive. If there were "Linux inside" we'd be using external drives already. SKY's offering the best it can with the internal 1TB drive upgrade.

+1 I was going to upgrade but after seeing the cost/gain I think I will wait untill they offer me something... I have 2 MySKY HDi units one on the $499 silver then $49 upgrade which I was happy to do and one through Vodafone. If it was even $49/unit I would do both. $149 is to much.

Whats the point of having esata and usb ports in the unit if they are crippled. Unless you can turn them on at any given time. They've had usb ports on some model of Sky stb's since 2006.

Doesn't really matter, I just find it funny. Do any of the FTA stb's offer the ability to record to an external hard drive?

Perhaps I am a little pev'd due the the fact I just upgraded to the HDi 10 days ago and the csr never cared to even mention this new unit is coming out.

I phoned Sky at 8.30 this morning to get my Sky+ sorted. Got straight through - no queue at all. After telling her what I wanted I was put on hold for 10 minutes, they told me that it would cost me $20 a month or another $649 dollars as I had not paid the $649 for the SkyHDi as I had paid the $500 (or whatever) for the grey MySky and upgraded, plus $99 install fee. On a special deal and that had now expired.

I told them this was not what I had been told last time I called and asked to speak to the supervisor. I was put on hold for another 10 minutes and she then came back and said I could have it for the $149, keep my HDi, trade in my silver box for Sky+.

They will be coming on Monday (quicker than I thought) to do the swap

This is a very good question!

My Sky HDi box just failed (hard drive failure I'm guessing as I could no longer record), so when I was talking to the Sky Helpdesk I asked about the planned 3D broadcasts for the RWC.  When I was told I would need the new MySky+ to be able to watch the 3D broadcasts, I agreed that if a technician was being sent out I may as well upgrade my faulty HDi box to MySky+ so I was 3D ready.

Of course, this came at a cost of having to hand over $99 and accept an additional $5 per month rental.

I actually pointed out that the additional storage capacity was of no real interest (I don't record that much anyway), so I was only interested in the pending 3D RWC coverage and any other future 3D broadcasts.

However, the MySki+ upgrade was installed today and I noted that it is exactly the same Pace box as the previous MySky HDi box.  I asked the installer and he seemed to agree that MySky+ was required for 3D, but I'm not actually convinced he really knew.

So then I located the following SkyTV help page:
http://skytv.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1307/related/1

This notes: "Please note that the 3D feed will be HD so you will need a My SKY HDi/My SKY + decoder with subscription to the HD ticket and SKY Sport package to gain access.

So now I'm suspecting I just paid $99 plus an extra $5 per month, for exactly the same box with just a bigger hard drive installed (which I don't actually need).

Frustrating that I can't get a consistent answer, or locate anything that actually suggests that the MySky+ box is actually any different to my older MySky HDi, but with just with a 1TB hard drive installed (instead of 320GB).

If this really is the case then I feel conned!  Given that a Western Digital 1TB hard drive currently costs $78 (based on Pricespy), and even the Video optomised AV-GP WD10EURS is only $90.  SO, I've more than paid for the replacement 1TB hard drive in the $99 upgrade cost, as well as being billed $5 a month (ongoing) for the privilege. So I'll be paying for the hard drive again and again every year! :(

For the person complaining about the tivo only having 2 tuners. You could just live with a bit of the program being cropped, but I have only ever had this problem once. Usually start being cropped is better than the end being cropped. The other solution is to buy another tivo for $360 if telecom are still doing that deal. Then use the home networking package to manage the programs between the tivos. With tivos, you do actually own them, unlike the sky ones, which I believe you only lease, and you can add more storage to a tivo, or download the programs to your computer.

Also this doesn't look good, if you are a mysky owner http://www.stuff.co.nz/technology/gadgets/5261874/MySky-eyes-storage-time-limit

Is there a way to copy you programs onto your computer from mysky over a homenetworking package to watch them later on an ipad or similar?
