Coming over in Nov for 2 weeks and again in April '14 and looking for the best prepay deal with a fair chunk of data since the place we're staying doesn't have internet access. Will be used for tethering a couple of tablets and maybe a chromebook. Last time we used skinny, this time, who knows... we'd like to keep the SIMs for the april trip too if possible.
Going to be staying in the Kapiti region.
Any ideas?

I used Vodafone last time, valid for 365 days, got a good deal with either extra minutes or extra data cost about $25 I think and lasted the month.
Be aware that at some phone booths in NZ there are Wifi AP's that are free to use for a limited time. I used them quite a bit in Picton, Wanaka and a few other random places

It maybe dependant on your device, telecom/skinny runs a 850mhz umts network and vodafone/2degrees run a 900mhz umts nw, so it depends if your devices are compatible with each that would be the first place to start

Sorry, should've mentioned devices. S4 and S3 so we can use whatever.

Any idea how much data you'd expect to use? All three major mobile providers offer a $19 pack that includes some minutes, txt, and 500MB data, and all offer a variety of extra data options. If you're considering 2Degrees, check if the area is in one of the Mobile Broadband areas. If so, their pricing is good. If not, it's incredibly expensive.

Personally, I'd look at Telecom. Unless it's changed very recently, Vodafone's higher-use data packs are for on-account only (please someone correct me if this is no longer the case - if you can get their 2GB packs on prepay VF may be the better choice depending on your usage level), Telecom will give you 3GB for $49. 2 Degrees do a 3GB pack for $50, but only within their Mobile Broadband zones - so if you're in one, it might be fine - they also offer a 12GB pack for $99 if so.

Will look into telecom as, with tethering a couple of tablets, 3Gb would probably be the best. Thanks.

If you are in the Kapiti region, you are in a 2Degrees Mobile broadband zone,

they will do you 3 GB for $50 for a month, or 12GB for $99,

Looks like that'll be the go if I can have more than one addon as I need it on Skinny.

I can't find that 3GB on their site :-/
Is that data only?

Awesome, thanks for that... I couldn't find it.
So I can get that on top of the $19 plan, yes?

Yep its an addon. You can even just have it by itself if you have just a data device or aren't intending to make many calls.

Would pay to check the coverage first though if you can. For example, historically 2 degrees coverage in the Waikanae beach area has been relatively poor, don't know what its like now though.

Good stuff! Thank you for that! I'll be getting 2 for phones as there will be a few calls, and tether the tablets to those so everyone can share data. The April trip will have 4 tablets :-/ ... kids xmas presents. lol.

I'll be in Pukerua Bay in Nov and Raumati south in April and the map shows both. Fingers crossed!
