The GPS is definatly real (satellite based) on the 6165 and 6275..

Today I tested both phones on a road-trip (for other reasons) and both worked very well.

Under the "collection" and "GPS info" there is a java application that allows you to set waypoints, check the distance for waypoints, have a "trip meter" which shows max speed, avg speed, alittude, bearing etc.

but there is not full maps support yet. If yoy are clever enough, you can set waypoints using Google maps (On your PC)  and either track to them, or track from them... nifty, good for seeing a satellite image of a house or waterfall i was a t for example.

And if you get lost in the bush, you can relay the exact co-ordinates to emergency services when you manage to get some coverage.

Is it possible to connect to the phone from the computer (via bluetooth) and retrieve the GPS information?

Does anyone know when, or even if, this phone is coming back on the market? The telecom site just says 'out of stock'....

No current ETA, but the 6165 is not EOL.

although it is not an end of life phone, I realsitically dont expect to see it back on the market, after recently speaking to a nokia representative, it was quite easy to replace the LCD's of those phones that were sent for repair, however it was more difficult tracking down which batches of new phones have the fault as not all 6165's were effected and logistically he indicated they may just call it quits on that one and move on with the new models.

While as a member of Geekzone I value your input and you are entitled to your opinion, this is mere speculation. There should be no Nokia 6165's in any Telecom Channel for sale.

Well if it is indeed gone, which phone would you recommend instead?

Is Telecom likely going to getting new phones in soon?

Perhaps if you want something with similar features, the Samsung W531. If you want a Nokia the 2855 is almost the same as the 6165 less the camera.

There are always new phones on the way, just a matter of wait and seeWink .

I cannot reccommend the 2855, the display is just totally awful on these and will frustrate you.... The extra $100 on a 6165 is money well spent.
The 6165's are coming back soon I hear. I just put a 6155 display in mine when it started blanking and have not had a problem since!

Yes I agree out of the box the screen is awful, but by applying your theme it makes a big difference.

BTW 6165i and 2855 are the same price =)

I would be interested to know which Noel Leeming Stores near you are still selling this model. Once again I will not recommend anyone purchasing this model at this time.

Yes I noticed that too, but I rang up and they didn't have it in stock anywhere.
I also rang telecom, They still don't have any new information and it was cleaned off their webpage simply because It has been listed as 'out of stock' for too long.

Both the Lower Hutt and Porirua stores have them...
Hang on, maybe it's already been covered, but what exactly is the problem with these phones (I was considering Trademe) - I mean, if the screen does go faulty, won't telecom have to fix it if it's under warranty?
