I ordered a phone off Mobicity's NZ website earlier this month; while I've read positive reports of purchasing from this company, my experience has been anything  but. I'm posting this here just to provide a heads-up to those who do the same thing as I do prior to using a company for the first time (ie, search for others' comments).

Ordered the phone (a Xperia SP) on 7 November; they immediately debited my credit card for the full amount (and a bit more - problems with the site initially accepting the use of a discount code, but only removing the discount after I had submitted all details including credit card). Their site stated the phone ships in 5-7 days.

I won't bore you with the details of the difficulties , but the phone apparently still hasn't arrived in their warehouse, and won't be available to send until at least this Wed (despite their site still claiming 5-7 days for shipping).

This is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay outside the timeframes indicated on their website, and what they have told me during phone-calls, on-line chats and emails. They've been polite but never acknowledged their stuff-ups and the stupidly long time it's taken to (not) fulfill my order.

The ironic thing is I received tracking information for a Fed Ex parcel from them, although it didn't say what was being sent - in the end, all that turned up was the screen protectors!

I have their agreement if the phone hasn't shipped by Thursday (over three weeks since the order was placed) I can cancel it. I don't want to do this - I just want my @#$@# phone!@

My suggestion to anyone purchasing a phone from Mobicity that isn't available for immediate shipping is to at least confirm time-frames prior to ordering - or buy elsewhere if you want to ensure a hassle-free purchase.

My bad for trying to save a few bucks...

Any company drop shipping phones from another country, the ETA's should be taken with a grain of salt. I have used them but I wouldn't again for a similar reason.

Next time will you go with a local retailer who holds actual stock but is a fair bit more expensive OR will you go with a different cheap overseas drop shipper?

Personally, I'm too much of a price wh0re (or champagne taste on a beer budget may be a better expression!) to not go for value; that said, it's the drop shipping I'd try to avoid next time. Last phone I bought was parallel imported, but from a Auckland firm that had the product in stock - that's what I should have done this time around, as the saving between Mobicity and the cheapest retailer in NZ was less than $30 (or the same price if I'd been able to pick it up in Akld). Buying an NZ-sourced Xperia SP would cost me an additional $220, so that was never an option on my budget...

EDIT: I see the cheapest retailer in NZ of this phone - Fair Buy - is also a drop-shipper; while they've got pretty good reviews on sites like Pricespy (sorry to mention the competition!), there are a few complaining of delays in shipping. Guess this is inevitable a risk attached to drop shipping, given the delivery is out of the hands of the retailer.

I sure hope not - I ensured the order was below $400.

Plus that was one of the signs that made me think this was a decent company - that they actively collect any GST and other charges at the checkout, rather than relying on NZ Customs to pick it up.

Having now bought cases, screen protectors and now some NFC tags for the phone I also have additional money riding on getting this model! Guess it will be trying an NZ-based store if this one doesn't come to the party...

Well that's one less website I need to look at when buying my next phone.

On a side note, bought a pink Note 3 for my wife from Expansys for the first time, shipped immediately and arrived on time via Fedex.

You shouldn't as  when you go to check out shipping and GST are added and listed.. Just had a look at the SP and it is listed as a total of $389  no GST..

yeah wary of drop shippers as a result of a ph purchase for my partner:

1. 3 weeks to arrive as opposed to the 1 week they stated
2. dies within 48 hrs
3. sent to china to be fixed - didn't tell me this until i chased them 1 week later
4. they propose 1 month turnaround
5. i said the above was not good enough and suggested they give me a replacement - only good bit is that they agreed
6. updates have been a pain as they need to be manually done
7. suspect the modem isn't a good match for nz as performance is a bit weak
8. ph is glitchy - but i can't be bothered dealing with them again - so i will wait till it dies and get a nz sourced ph instead

lesson learned - for a $400NZD item - the $100 saved by paying $300 through them (+$40 for sw u/g) was just not worth it.

note: this was with a different company - but i believe the same risks apply to all drop shippers.

Sourcing and bringing them item over yourself is the better option. I've been dealing through a dealer that I found via Aliexpress that has been great.

I've had a couple items through him so far, a week shipping every time with working tracking numbers. Even bought 2 x Huawei Medialink 10.1 tablets which locally were being sold for near $700 that were $300 shipped.

Will continue going through him as he tests every item before sending to make sure that everything is 100%. Only things I'm forced to buy locally now are TV's or large items due to shipping costs :-/

Some items can't be purchased here, for an example my retro gaming collection.

Last Wed. I was told the phone would arrive in their warehouse by this Wed (or Thur at the latest); and would be shipped out to me the next day at the latest.

Spoke to them yesterday (Wed) - hadn't arrived yet, but still expected it that or the following day.

Chatted online with them today (Thur) - phone now expected into the warehouse by "end of next week".

(note - first use of emoticons ever! Easiest way to express myself...)

This is now the third week in a row where they have stated "next week" as the arrival time. The previous two times have been proven to be bollox, so I can't think of any reason why to believe them this time.

At least they had the courtesy to refund the $10 that the phone has dropped by since I ordered it (at my request, mind you!).

Still in two minds about cancelling and ordering from elsewhere - considering only other cheap places are also drop-shippers, who's to say I won't have the same problem!

My recommendation to anyone thinking of purchasing with Mobicity is - be careful. If you really do want to do so, get some clear assurance of time-frames before handing over your credit card details.

EDIT: Have now just received emails from Mobicity stating the phone has been shipped. Considering last time they said that only screen protectors turned up, I wonder if this time I'll get just one of those bags of air! Possibly internal miscommunication there - either way, some crud service. Will just be pleased to get the phone.

I am finding that Mobicity isn't always the cheapest. In fact, they are not on most items.

They are good at getting the latest and greatest in, however, you are still going to pay for it (as in, pay a premium).

We have enough parallel imported stores in NZ to not require Mobicity, unless you want something just released.
