Posted in another thread, this is a step in a good direction. It is a pity SMS isn't supported (I understand why).

Numerous Geekzoners have discussed virtualising/hosting SIMs over the years, someone needs to make it happen :-)

shk292: Has anyone tried the Roamer app (https://roamerapp.com/en/)?  I saw an article about this in the UK Telegraph recently; it seems a good way to remain connected to your NZ number when roaming with a local SIM or WIFI.  Definitely looks worth a try

I'm setting up a cheap android phone to act as a forwarding device while I'm overseas. The idea is to leave it plugged in and on in nz. I've got 'sms forwarder' an app which forwards either via text or email. It also notifies of missed calls.

Now I'm intrigued by this roamer app, wondering whether it will forward calls in some manner without me going down the voip/sip route.

From what i have read, it gives you a home-country phone number to which you forward all calls, which are then forwarded to a VOIP number where you're roaming.  Then they provide outgoing VOIP calls at good rates
