MichaelNZ:

An update:

I took the phone to Palmerston North Noel Leeming this afternoon. They accepted the return but tried to force me to take gift vouchers, which I didn't want to accept.

I pressed the point and they eventually agreed to a refund but they clearly didn't want to do that. Furthermore, I would have to wait for the refund to be processed and the sales lady did not want to give me a receipt acknowledging they had received the phone back in good order.

I will contact my bank tomorrow to inform them of the matter but I hope it doesn't come to a chargeback.

Given how risky it apparently is buying from Noel Leeming I will try Harvey Norman in preference next time.

You can't really blame the retailer on this as the box/google website does say supports band 28, the issue is here that it only support 1/2 of band 28 and it's very hard to find anymore info on it.  All the retailer knows is that it says it supports it.  Maybe vodafone and 2degrees need to let retailers know that it does not support their 4g bands to stop confusion to customers

Retailers should take the time to test mobile phones that they intend to sell.

Chorus has spent $1.4 billion on making their xDSL broadband network faster and even more now as they are upgrading their rural Conklins. If your still stuck on ADSL or VDSL, why not spend $195 on a master filter install to make sure you are getting the most out of your connection?

It wasn't exactly easy to find info when I bought this phone while on 2deg, ended up changing provider and cancelling my 2 deg plan.

I didn't buy locally so entirely my responsibility, but I did take it in to a 2deg store and ask them if it was all good and they said yep. Then ensued several weeks of frustration wondering why reception was so poor, confirming band 28 and not being sure what the problem was.

Couldn't find a straight answer so bought a skinny sim to test it for myself - now I'm with skinny direct.

Still have far worse reception than my wife's Moto g 1st gen on the train ride in to Wellington but I'm not sure if that's just because 2deg has better coverage on the Johnsonville line or if it's just the phone.

I don't think 2dgrees run much in the way of 700 yet.

I have 4G on my Nexus 5X when I am in the CBD (Dunedin), but am dropped back down to 3G/H when at home (Mosgiel)

Thankfully it was due to NikT that I knew of this limitation and it doesn't affect me in anyway.

If you're still on 2degrees it doesn't matter anyway as they have yet to deploy 4G over 700MHz. :)

I think they have a handful of sites that "may" have 700, license is there for them, but basically 2dgrees have not launched anything of any significance in the 700 band.

I'm sure they have it in testing, but as coffeebaron says, nothing of significance I'm aware of. Makes choosing a phone a bit easier for 2d customers at least.
