I am astounded that anyone would not want a personal one-to-one voice contact! with another person!

Pro-tip: if your phone call you’re about to place can be sorted over an email then send an email.

That’s time management 101.

The thing about phone calls, as much as I love the more personal contact and can appreciate that others may do also, is that they demand the recipient’s attention with no concern of what they’re currently doing.

That's interesting, out of curiosity where about's in NZ are you? I've got my definitely not supported Xiaomi Mi9se with a 3rd party ROM working with VoLTE. SMS was a bit hit and miss initially, but that's come right in recent times. Also had it working with Spark (after I asked one of the Geekzone guys to enable it). SMS was also an issue with Spark then from memory SMS over IP(IMS) wasn't enabled initially or something.

It's in Wellington. I've tried a skinny sim and it doesn't enable VoLTE either. Interestingly, I've just tried a Kogan sim in the phone and VoLTE just works on it without any issues. So, Kogan, a MVNO on Vodafone has VoLTE working. Vodafone does not :-(

It took Vodafone some time to enable VoLTE on some Huawei devices. Apparently they (Vodafone) had some settings that disagreed with the Huawei handsets. Those same handsets worked just fine on Spark.

Basically VoLTE is a mess.

I note that the scenarios put forward for the 'Next Generation Critical Communications' (for emergency Service providers) include reliance on LTE networks. I wonder if they will use any improvement on VoLTE for voice comms.....?

It is really sad just how much of a mess this whole thing is...

I have a Galaxy S20+ which I purchased from Noel Leeming back in May. I was under the assumption that the new Samsung flagships were carrier-agnostic, so I thought I didn't have to worry (I also wasn't offered different carrier 'variants' when I made the purchase). It turns out that the device I have is the VNZ variant and this has meant that I was not able to use VoLTE on Skinny despite gajan's efforts. However, VoLTE works perfectly fine on Kogan due it to being an MVNO using Vodafone's network.

It is really unfortunate that a flagship series phone released in 2020 still has carrier certification problems that prevent it from being able to utilise VoLTE across all carriers.

Totally different technology. They are relying on LTE as an IP bearer for their own IP based services.,

There is a reason VoLTE isn't in use for 100% of calls on LTE networks 8 years after it launched!

What's going to be really interesting is both T-Mobile and AT&T moving too 100% VoLTE only in the US this year as they decommission their 3G networks. This is going to affect roaming as well, and since VoLTE roaming basically doesn't exist it'll mean people will basically not be able to make voice calls if they're roaming in the US.

A little confused by the above posts.

Does this mean that the average mobile phone user, who has probably never heard of VoLTE, may find that they have no reception in some areas?

They might "reception" for data but might not have a voice service if the phone does not support VoLTE.

Who knows quite frankly. I don't think any telco has any plans to kill off 3G for the next few years but with phones that do support it and just need an update, it will just happen automatically without user intervention.
