I've just picked up a Nokia 3120 classic. It's kind of neat. It supports pop3 as well as google's mobile gmail app. Just for laughs, I threw an SSH client on there as well.

Although I can browse the web fine over packet data, I can't seem to get a connection to gmail via their app or the phone's pop3 client. Same deal for the shell. The operations just time out eventually.

Is this sort of traffic blocked on the VF network, or is there something I can change in the default VFNZ gateway setup?

VFNZ Gateway is a WAP Access Point.

You should be using VFNZ Internet for general internet access.

As above and there is no port blocking done by Vodafone NZ

My bad, the preset access point's alias is "VF NZ Internet" and the access point is "www.vodafone.net.nz".

Is that the WAP gateway or the normal one?

Wap gateway is live.vodafone.com

Alrighty then. What else could be preventing outgoing connections? I've checked the details several times, tried from in the city and tried several different applications.

I've got to admit, the pages I've been browsing do look like they're WAP pages. Is VF NZ Internet only available over a 3G connection? (I've tried both 3G and the regular flavour).

APNs are not 2G / 3G related

In that case I'm out of ideas.

Does anyone else here use a Nokia 3120c and are able to use non-wap internet services?

Managed to figure it out while we were out.

There's an APN selection list under: Settings -> Connectivity -> Packet Data, which contained the pre-entered setting for VFNZ Internet (www.vodafone.net.nz). This is a trick and should not be trusted. This setting isn't used anywhere in the phone as far as I can tell.

To set up the actual gateway (which defaulted to the VFNZ wap gateway) you go to: Settings -> Configuration -> Personal Config Settings... and create a new personalised config. After creating one, go to Access Point Settings -> Bearer Settings... and enter your settings (ignoring username/password). Then go back to Settings -> Configuration -> Preferred Access Point... and choose the new access point you just created.

Although this looks simple, it was fairly buried. Plus 4 Internet Points to me, which I immediately spend in Charisma, the stat for when all your other stats are already buff.
