mmmmmm not a Vodafone NZ sold E71 then

It may not be. It has field test software on it so it could be a special.

If I do a factory reset, I am worried I might lose the field test application - any thoughts?

It depends where the application is installed.

If it is installed on the handset memory it will be wiped, if it's installed on the memory card then it should be fine.

field test! whoa, that is a special phone!

you may not be able to update it and if you do update it, there may be certain things that no longer work or it may brick due to it being a test device. see if there is anything on the label that says "property of nokia" "not for sale" or "proto"

try removing the apn "vfnz internet" and readding one with apn "internet"

if that fails, back up everything and hard reset with the multikey combination (google it).

I heard back from Nokia with the following:

Hi Rob,

In order for me to assist you further, I would appreciate it if you could please revert to me with these details:

1. Where did you originally obtain or download the "Field test" software from?

2. If you obtained it from a website, please provide me with the exact web link.

3. Additionally, may I know the format of this application please? Is it in a .SIS file format and is it perhaps saved or downloaded to your computer (PC) beforehand?

4. What is the email account are you trying to access on your Nokia E71 (web-based like Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail or others such as a corporate email?)

5. Are you able to send emails out from your mobile phone?

6. Are you accessing your email with General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) or 3G?

7. What is the exact steps that you take to access the email on your mobile phone ie. do you access it via the "Web" or via the shortcut in the "Messaging" feature?

8. Can you access the Internet from your phone and subsequently browse the Internet?

9. For testing purposes, if you send an email from your PC and you then connect to your email on your phone, please check and see if you are able to receive the email. In the mean time, you may also send an email from your phone and see if you are able to view that email on your PC.

10. Have you check with your email provider to see if the email settings on your phone is correct ie. the incoming and outgoing server addresses?

With more information, I will be able to better assist you. Please feel free to provide me with any other information as it might be useful to us as well. Hence, I look forward to your reply with these details, Rob.

Thank you for emailing Nokia Careline, Rob. Have a nice day ahead!

Do you know you can now update your phone software at your own convenience?

Visit www.nokia.com.au/support to check if your phone model is supported and download the "Nokia Software Updater".

And I responded thus:

Hi there,

Answers to your questions:

1. My employer, Infratel, is a contractor for Vodafone. Vodafone purchased the phone directly from Nokia with the Field Test software installed and on-sold the phone to Infratel.

2. No website, the phone was supplied with the software already installed.

3. I can't seem to find out what format this application is. When I open the app, and look at "about" it reads: FieldTest 1.00, Release Date 11.05.06, Copyright Nokia.

4. My email account is on a MS Exchange server, and I am using "Mail for Exchange". It was working fine, up to about three weeks ago.

5. No, I cannot send emails either.

6. I usually use 3G, but I have tried it with a WLAN giving the same results.

7. I used to get an indication on my home screen when I had new email, which took me straight to my inbox. Otherwise I used the shortcut in "Messaging".

8. No issues with accessing the internet from my phone.

9. Since the Mail for Exchange stopped working, I have not been able to send or receive any email from my phone.

10. Yes I have checked my settings with colleagues with similar phones and similar email accounts, and all the details are the same.

Enclosed is a copy of an admin log I found on my phone if that helps.

Regards,

Rob

Nolia have come back to me with:

Hi Rob,

Thank you for the email.

Based on the information thus far, I would suggest to uninstall the Mail for Exchange (MFE) and then reinstall the MFE back into your Nokia E71. However, before re-installing the MFE, I would suggest to reboot your phone to temporarily refresh the phone memory. To reboot your phone, please refer to the steps listed below:

1) Please switch off the phone and remove the back cover then the battery.

2) Please leave the battery out of the phone for 10 - 15 minutes.

3) Please place everything back together, switch on the phone and install the MFE.

Please come back to me with the outcome.

Thank you for emailing Nokia Careline, Rob.

Well, that didn't work either.

Nokia have come back again with a questionaire mainly about my company's exchange server - I know very little about this, and it is in Auckland and I'm in the South Island.

They don't seem very keen on resetting my phone, so I won't do that.

Time passes....

Was that an email??!? - no, false alarm..........sigh!

Have you tried as I've suggested earlier..

Change what your email syncs from the time period you have (2 Weeks back or whatever you have it set to) to All Messages.

This can be found under Menu > MfE > Mail foe Exchange > Options > Edit Profile > Email > Sync Messages Back.

Let it do this for a few minutes and let me know if its started syncing or not.

Still the same problem. It seems to not be able to talk to the exchange server, and can't sync at all.

Have you tried disabling everything EXCEPT the Email with the same settings?

I sometimes have issues with MFE, like this.

Won't sync a damn thing. So what I do is uninstall MFE, and then reinstall it, problem solved. (albeit you have to set it up again).

Sorry if you have tried that, I just quickly skimmed over the thread

Thanks Aaroona, I have tried that a number of times, still no better.

I have done loads of tooing and frooing with Nokia, and they have been very friendly and helpful, just unable to come up with a solution that doesn't involve wiping my field test application.

I have talked to our Operations Manager (it is a company phone), and we have decided that I will give up my handset (it's probably better if a technician has the filed test capability, rather than an ex technician project manager - I'll only end up getting into trouble at some stage), in exchange for a more "standard" E71 handset.

Thanks for all your suggestions. You're quite a clever lot really!!?!
