NZtechfreak: Surely we know someone trustworthy in the states who could ship them?

Quick google reveals pretty much only bad word of mouth for them, main complaint being very slow shipping, hardly ideal when all everyone wants here is expedited delivery upon release!

EDIT: Looking at similar services usglobalmail seems to have a good reputation, or possibly usunlocked.

EDIT 2: Ooh, forgot to say, at $441 US I'm unbelievably keen...

Using a third party site like those, who's name would the warranty be in...is it in the name of the site, or the purchaser? (if the site purchases on our behalf, assuming in their name, the warranty would be in their name?)

Interesting...will look into that more I think...

http://www.shipito.com/ is another service that seems to be rated highly by users.

With them it looks like you can make the purcahse and do everything, meaning warranty etc is in your name, its just sent to one of their addresses.

Working out possible shipping costs, using the US Global Mail site shipping rates calculator, we would be looking at $51.40 US per unit.

That is based on:
Dimensions: 7.3 x 7.7 x 2.1 inches
Weight: 1.4 pounds (have to choose 2lb option)

That would be 4-5 days delivery time, using FedEx International Economy.

The cheapest option is only $24.49 US, but has a slow delivery time of 7-21 days

Then I looked at a group import...
Say 10 people:
Dimensions: 14.6 x 7.7 x 10.5 inches
Weight: 14 pounds

Result: $140.42 US
Divide that by ten people, $14.50 US each, so its far cheaper, AND, that price is the fastest delivery time of 1-3 days, using FedEx International Priority.

I read more into US Global Mail and the address is in your name, so the goods would be in your name, meaning warranty, which is good.

Will research more.

Hmmmm......now where to buy from...
NZ options still thin on the ground...
International options available aplenty, just more risk, more hassle...but substantial savings to be made.
Hmmmm...

I expect it won't be until early next week when we can actually make an order, usually takes a few days from shipping commencing to begin actually reaching sellers and being clocked into inventories, so its availability will remain limited for a little while yet. You can always purchase devices in this period, but at a cost premium. Waiting a few days is likely to be very worthwhile.

I can confirm a Vodafone 3G sim card works fine on an N900 device that a friend was using today. This was on one of the pre-release devices supplied at a Maemo conference but I'd guess that means it works on a production device.

Don't forget with bulk import, that it could be subjected to duty-fee and/or GST tax.

That comment intially concerned me, so I did some digging...

Apparently, the problem is specific to network provider 3, which uses custom sim cards for their 3G network, which appear to be incompatible....

Therefore, there is no need to worry about Vodafone NZ.
