dale77: Further explorations:

- Firmware in NZ seems to be lagging a bit, v31 is available elsewhere, but does not appear as an upgrade option, my handset has v21.

Mine is upgraded to v31... I think the check is based on the model number (RM number). Mine is RM-356, language set 22, and has had v31 since September 09. *#0000# and check for updates (wifi recommended).

I did look into it once and I think the only way is to hack the phone and change the RM number etc so it is recognised as a different region where the SW is available. As far as I know you can't download the SW and apply the upgrade any other way.

Hmm, seems v40 firmware has just been released with some goodies, yet I get "no updates available" on my v21...

The fact that you haven't been able to get an update very much depends on where you've bought the handset from and whether or not the custom version of firmware for that 5800 variant has been approved by the network operator that sold the device.

Have you tried both Over the Air (*#0000# Options > Check for Updates) on the handset and via Nokia Software Updater?

Well... This is a parallel import device, currently hooked up to 2degrees. Phones bought over the counter would presumably be vodafone. Since 2degrees had zero involvement in the purchase of the device, I would hope they aren't the source of the update blockage.

I have tried *#0000# and software update.

When I say its up to the operator to approve a variant of software I'm referring to the operator the handset was initially sold to.

Being parallel imported it could be from anywhere in Asia or the Middle East.

Not much you can do I'm afraid.

It is hard to know exactly why the update is being denied. It would be nice if the update process said something like "Sorry, Dubai Telecom has not yet OK'ed your firmware update"...

I wonder if Nokia in NZ can "re-flash" to the NZ firmware?

edit: I presume "NZ firmware" would include vodafone "special sauce" so perhaps that is unlikely

Actually, one can "reinstall" the v21 firmware. I wonder what that would do - presumably just bring it back to "Dubai" baseline...

Nokia NZ cannot flash to to anything other that what that product code has had approved.

While in essence all 5800's are the same device, each country usually has their own product code associated to each device. Attached to this product code is a custom firmware version. If the handset was initially produced for Telecom Dubai for example then only they can approve that version of custom firmware.

Re installing version 21 will do only that, it won't unlock anything to allow you to laod anything different.

Firmawre V40 isn't available FOTA at the moment - use the Nokia Software Updater (NSU) on your PC - NOT Ovi suite.

Version 40.0.005 is up and running on mine currently.

I used Nemesis to change my product code (I have a parallel import) to NZ Red and it worked a treat - it's so simple it's laughable.

For info go and see the geeks at forums.dailymobile.se - they're very helpful (I should know, I'm one of them) and the info is invaluable.

It's not technically "hacking your phone" when you change the product code...and it can be changed back if you're worried about it after you've updated the firmware.

For what it's worth - the new firmware is essentially the Nokia 5530 XM firmware...which is not a complaint, by the way. It's very good, so far.

Thanks. I did the necessary and am happily running v40 now. I chose NZ Blue to match the pretty stripe.

As you say, Nemesis is almost as simple as it could be.
