Hi,

I've just spent a frustrating hour with Google support and have nothing to show for it.

We host an Exchange 2010 server, and send email directly, not via a smarthost.

Our static IP has a PTR record which matches the MX Record which also matches the server name used for helo/ehlo. We also have a strict SPF record.

Yet any mail we send to a Google Group get's bounced as spam. Sending to a Google Apps user or Gmail address is fine, it only fails to a Google Group.

Google support say they can't tell me why it's failing as they say it would compromise the effectiveness of there spam filter if people knew why it was blocking their emails!

We are not on any blacklists and have no trouble emailing anywhere else.

Has anyone else experienced this and found a solution?

Was that phone support? You should email them asking for an explanation, and that it gets escalated to the correct technical person. Sounds like you were just dealing with customer support following flowcharts, so their explanation IMHO probably isn't correct, and they are just using that as an excuse because they can't answer it without escalating it.  Most hosting providers for instance have logs that show an exact reason why emails are bounced back or blocking the emails. So you should request those logs.

Live Chat support. He looked up our SPF records etc, so he seemed to have some idea of what he was talking about. I might pop it in an email tomorrow, I'm over it for today!

Considered adding another level of authentication such as DKIM? Google supports DKIM and this could help.

We use ThinkDKIM here on Geekzone (Windows Server SMTP though, not Exchange) and Google flags the keys as valid, which is a good boost.

Exchange doesn't natively support DKIM, and I don't really want to go to the effort and expense of implementing DKIM when they apparantly can't even tell me if this will fix the issue.
