gregmcc:
old3eyes: Maybe TiVo should suggest say a $5 / month maintenance fee like they have in the US for EPG maintenance etc.. I would rather pay that than have a box that has about the level of usability as an old VCR.

It's a suggestion, but most people paid a quite high price to buy the Tivo's on the condition that a "lifetime service" was provided, now it seems that tivo seem to be cutting portions of the service.

If Tivo decide to quit NZ then as far as i'm concered they have broken the sale and purchase terms and I will be chasing them for a full refund.

It may be worth pushing them on the interim about the lack of closed captions. It is part of the Tivo service.

Telecoms Tivo Terms & Conditions mention the following:

Separate terms apply to your use of the TiVo Media Device, TiVo Service , CASPA™ On-Demand Service (CASPA™ Service), and Home Networking Package:

  • Your use of your TiVo Media Device and TiVo Service is governed by the Terms of Use of TiVo Media Device and TiVo Service agreement with Hybrid Television Services (ANZ) Pty Limited.

Then the Terms and conditions from Tivo mention the following:

Your TiVo media device comprises a digital video recorder ("DVR") and any optional TiVo branded accessories purchased by you which operates in conjunction the TiVo service and other services. You may access and use the TiVo service and other services outlined in these Terms only with a TiVo media device that is authorised to receive the TiVo service. Activation of the TiVo service enables a range of features for you to use on your TiVo media device, as follows: THE TIVO® SERVICE:

a. Free 14 day On Screen Guide for most free-to-air channels
b. Compatible with free-to-air service: bringing you all the free to air digital terrestrial channels
c. SD and HD ready: ability to receive HD resolution picture (with purchase of HDMI cable)
d. 320GB hard drive: recording capacity of up to 120 hours of High Definition (HD) recordings or 250 hours of Standard Definition (SD) recordings
e. Dual tuners allowing you to record two programmes at the same time as watching a third programme already recorded
f. Ability to control live TV (pause, rewind and slow motion live TV)
g. Season Pass™ recordings: to automatically record every episode in your favourite series (available for most free-to-air channels)
h. WishList™ searches: to automatically record every programme with your favourite actor or director (available for most free-to-air channels)
i. TiVo® Suggestions: to record progammes based on your preferences
j. TiVo® KidZone and parental controls: ability to set up recordings which are safe for your kids' eyes
k. Closed captioning on all programs broadcast with closed captioning
l. TiVo Genie remote scheduling feature: to schedule recordings from anywhere in the world using the internet including from internet enabled mobile phones (available for most free-to-air channels)
m. Software updates as they become available: automatic software upgrades without having to buy a new TiVo media device;
n. Access to separately available optional upgrades (such as the Home Networking Package). All of these features ("the TiVo Service") are described in more detail at www.mytivo.co.nz/whatistivo.

So TIVO is guilty of misleading advertising and their equipment is not fit for the purpose.
Perhaps time for a complaint to the Commerce Commission.
They could possibly face refunds to all TIVO owners.

Well as Dan mentioned, the problem is within the transmission stream sent by TVNZ

I doubt its an issue for the Commerce Commission.

Hooray! It seemed to be working ok - be interesting to see if it is properly fixed and that there will be no repeat issues.

Thanks TVNZ but it is a shame it has taken so long to fix and no communication from TVNZ which is very poor.

Cheers!

Really. I checked on my HVR2200 and was getting captions a while back when TIVOs weren't.

Guys, the US engineers are still busy nailing down the exact reasons.

The loss of the teletext stream triggered the breaking of CC, and TVNZ are helping out by re-enabling a blank teletext stream until the exact cause can be located and rectified.

We are working on a permanent fix, I just don't have any further answers for you at the moment.

Dan

Aaaaaand... Knowing it's been a while in coming...

The permanent fix is being rolled out in a new firmware now (b7).

Some of you will already be running the new firmware, with all units updating by the end of next weekend (unless of course there are issues)

Cheers,

Dan

Ta Dan

Will the upgrade also help with the TV3 captions?

If not is there any longer term plan to address this?

Thanks

Alan

Testing was mostly limited to TVNZ, there was some limited testing with other channels, but not enough for me to call it and give you 'good news'

Cheers Dan

Will check my firmware and ensue the units has been upgraded, dI am curently on 11.3b5-01-2-663

Ultimate test will be when TVNC stop broadcasting the "Blank" teletext page that has been the TV1 and TVS2 caption carier to date.

Would be good to have some advanced notice of when TVNZ stop the blank teletext page so we can monitor the  impact better.
