After a few nights fault finding I have narrowed it down to one of my beloved TiVo's.  It has started to intermittently drop it's HDMI output (handshake issues?).  Sometimes it blinks on and off every second, and sometimes the signal gets lost altogether.  A quick unplug of the HDMI cable or turning the TV off and on fixes it till it occurs next time.  Often coincides with a new recording starting or finishing.  Cables and TV's have been eliminated, and the issue does not occur when the suspected faulty unit is replaced with my other TiVo.

Given they are obsolete in NZ (sob sob) are these worth repairing?  If so who does the repairs?  (Waikato)

In the event I will have to resign to replacing it with something else (I refuse to go back to watching live TV), what else in the PVR offerings even comes close?

Damn these first world problems!

Edit:  Well out of warranty an unfortunately probably borderline on the CGA as well.

Give telecom a try, assuming you bought it from there.they might be accommodating with a replacement or repair even though it is out of formal warranty.

I have 3x TiVos and one of mine has had a similar problem for over a year. Works fine if I force output to 576P or 576i but any HD resolution gives the same result as you - intermittent HDMI handshake problems. It's not the TV or HDMI cable.

Thankfully I use this one mainly to record, then use the HNP feature to copy programs to another TiVo on my network. Would love to get this fixed, and if I'd known it was the TiVo instead of a suspect TV back when it was under warranty, I would have sent it in then.

I believe Hybrid maybe flexible on the warranty aspect of this particular fault?

If you're listening Dan Hybrid, do you think we have a chance?

I must admit that I replaced the TV as I thought that is what was failing. The old TV had slightly different symptoms but still signal related. Also have been living with the glitches for a long time.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't hold out much hope but gave Telecom a ring as suggested. To my surprise they are standing by the product and are sending me a refurbished unit as a replacement (there are no new ones in the country). More than happy to get one thats tested and working.

So big bouquet to Telecom :-)

Great product, great support, and it fails to fly in NZ....shame.

Even though you've solved the problem, for future; it would still be possible to order one in from overseas. Even if you had to use a drop ship service like YouShop.

I don't think this works anymore, they've gone a bit crazy on the lockdowns to prevent that sadly enough - else I'd be one to do this.

Are they doing this at no charge, and if not, how much is this costing you? I may do the same depending on your outcome.

Regardless of any commercial restrictions, there are no units available on this side of the pond either. US/Other region units will not work

CSR said that as we purchased it from Telecom, and have remained loyal Telecom customers, they would stand by the product and swap out the faulty unit for a refurbished one.  No agreement or discussion at all about costs so assume it's at no charge.

Did you try another HDMI cord witha different brand? I recently had a HDMI cord refuse to work with a panasonic Blue Ray player had worked fine but then just stopped, same cord in other devices worked fine but once I changed cables from a different manufacturer no problem at all.

But otherwise trademe for a new tivo thankfully all those telecom customers who got one and didn't want them provided a bit of a supply chain for awhile at least.
