mattwnz: I believe they had a very hard DOA rate, as I had three failures out of the box. But once going they seem to be rock solid, as I have 3 which are all running fine, and friends and family who I suggested to are also all running fine. I beleive the harddrives can also be replaced if they do fail, and HDs are almost a consumable, as they will always fail eventually.

I got both of mine unused 3-4 years ago via TradeMe for under $200 each and they never skipped a beat.  I replaced one noisy fan with a 3rd party version, and replaced a hard drive with a 2Tb drive for extra storage about a year ago (should have done that earlier!) following online instructions.  Fluffed it up by not reading instructions carefully and lost my recordings, but all the settings including future scheduled recordings were saved.

I see that plex is now offering live tv as well as dvr, so this could be a solution for some

Panasonic just answered my question about oz panasonic DMRBWT955GL working here.:

Thank you for your e-mail.

This model is not going to be released in NZ – There is a difference between the Digital TV broadcast systems in NZ and Australia.

Looking at the specs for the TV channels – it does not cover the same channels so my expectation is that it is only designed for the Australian market and will not work over here.

Australia has a different channel spacing.  If you can adjust this in the menu's then it's very similar.

A bit like older AM radios having this option.

A bit of info below for those interested from panasonic..

Hi Steve – Thank you – we have had a lot of enquiries since it was announced that TiVo was being discontinued.

Our current recorder series as below - the 260 – 560 and 760 will work in Australia and NZ. There are no other new models due to be released shortly.

Kind regards

John

At the moment I think it only works on Android TV and iOS apps.

This one also looks like a good replacement at harvey norman, same size hard drive as the tivo had anyway and its 4K..

This mornings posts promoted me to have another look at the options https://www.panasonic.com/nz/consumer/home-entertainment/freeview-recorders/ and I think on balance I'll go for the DMR-HWT260GN on special this weekend.  The 760 is on special at JB at present for $520 and that was tempting to replace our Blu-ray player as well, but we use it as a home stereo....  and I'm not interested in being an early 4K adopter.

4K has been out for some time now lol. Just hasn't been much uptake.

Most of the new TV's coming out now are 4K and a lot of programs on netflix are 4K as well so its not really early adoption.

They have also stopped making TV's with 3D now and are concentrating on bringing out high quality pictures instead.

I just had my 5 year old 46" LG LED TV replaced by insurance and they couldn't find a 3D tv to replace it so they gave me a larger 49" 4K LG TV instead.

The picture quality is amazing compared to my old one and watching a 4K program on netflix is even better quality.

*chuckle* How about "I'm not interested in being anywhere on the leading edge with 4K, but might reconsider when broadcast TV goes 4K".

Well, the TV upscales everything to 4K anyway so its already here :)

And I'm still using the Tivo through it, picture quality has improved greatly and is the same as freeview on the TV tuner.
