Maxcat:

Here is my Tivo column in today's Waikato Times:

https://www.stuff.co.nz/waikato-times/98973199/max-christoffersen-aussie-battlers-deserve-full-credit-for-saving-tivo

Umm, I thought we were keeping quiet about this?

Ownership of EPG data has caused a stir in the past when people have piped a guide to different projects. Before the Freeview MHEG5 EPG extract tool was going for windows media centre, the companies got jumpy about sites that scraped their data and presented to download in one place etc.

That said there is no one left TiVo company wise to get offended, only TiVo themselves or the TV stations, as if us knowing when a programme is screening is somehow a bag thing for them?!

The obvious progression to the TiVo software hack now is to enable the HNP for all users.

I think it is more important to let people know there is a fix and keep Tivos from landfill.

The earlier story linked in my column also talks of a software patch.

To me, this column was a kind of Public Service Announcement for those who aren't in the loop of Geekzone and can now make an informed decision to upgrade or abandon.

It seems somewhat pointless not to let users know because of any fear of repercussion. Right now, there are options and we will all have to wait and see how this plays out.

Other stories will be published, mine is simply the first as I am a Tivo owner/enthusiast.

Just had contact from a friend in Waikato who was completely unaware until he read your article. He had bought a "useless" Panasonic DVR as a replacement. I'd forgotten that he had a TiVo so hadn't let him know.

So you've saved at least one TiVo from landfill. Thanks.

EDIT: if possible please update your article with a picture of the correct TiVo. He's emailed me again with a picture of the TiVo model he has, obviously confused by the one on the article.

That's great. Pleased my column is helping someone!

I hope more owners do get the message they can be saved.

I will ask my editors to see if they change to a Series 3 pic....

Yes it was seen in the Oztivo Slack Developers forum also. At least one prominent New Zealander who has been very involved with this project now and since 2002 was a little sad the Aussies got all the glory.

Some Connections stats from the new OzTivo mothership today. NZ holding it's own against Aussie.

*570 units seen (+42 since yesterday), 530 active in the last 7 days*
> AU 310 TSN’s seen (+5.4% in 24hrs), 293 active (+4.3%) in the last 7 days
> NZ 252 TSN’s seen (+10.5% in 24hrs), 230 active (+10.0%) in the last 7 days

I wonder if that is because Australian ones are likely to be several years older than the NZ ones on average. Also in Oz they had an offer to get a replacement at a discounted price, if it was traded in, so I am guessing a lot of the boxes ended up somewhere or in landfills as part of that process. It is such a waste, when the hardware itself is capable of working for many years, with perhaps the odd hardrive and fan replacement when they wear out.

I'm going to look further afield also, but they maybe worth looking at?

These seem quite popular and have a low noise rating: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835228027

They are really only cost effective if you buy a few and then use a super cheap reshipper like Ship2U to get them to NZ.  If newegg send them direct they want to charge far too much for shipping.

The same fan is available from Amazon.

These people also sell TiVo parts  https://www.weaknees.com/

When you go into the guided setup it will ask you if you have activated your tivo

Click on the yes option. Did you click on the no option ?
