Hi all. Am I doing something wrong? The short version: I have out TIVO S3 modded, have tried using it, and have found we are missing a lot of shows.

The longer version: I am very grateful to the modders and OzTivo community, and I had great hopes as I love the Tivo interface and don't see anything devices. The guide data seemed pretty buggy over Christmas, but I gave it the benefit of the doubt as a lot of shows go on hiatus over Christmas and are replaced by repeats, and the other problems I had with shows being marked as repeats when they were new, or marked as new when repeats I put down to teething problems and I was willing to wait it out. But tonight I noticed we are still having problems, e.g:

  • Three advertised a new show "9JKL" which I could not find on tivo a week or two ago, and I searched again tonight and still can't find it, though the Freeview TV Guide online says there is a new episode on Feb 15th.
  • There have been times I have seen a show advertised, and looked for it by channel for that day and found whole days of tivo guide data missing for that channel.
  • I was having trouble with tivo not recording new episodes of multiple series (The Middle, Modern Family, Big Bang Theory, etc) if set to record "First Run Only", so the only way I could get them to record was to set it to record repeats, and there were so many repeats on that I we got swamped with repeats and spent a lot of time sorting the repeats from the new ones. I haven't re-checked in the last few weeks, but I suspect it is still a problem and I am loosing motivation and the wife is loosing patience.
  • I have the nagging feeling I am missing shows (e.g. New episodes of Big Bang Theory), but its time consuming to prove, and all Online TV Guides I've found to try to compare to are pretty terrible for various reasons (either don't list SxxEyy) or only have a day in advance etc.

The only thing I can think of is that when I got it back, modded, that I only added new season passes - I did not delete old season passes, but would that cause problems?

I've very keen to hear other people's experiences or possible solutions. I really don't want a panny or dish.

It seems you haven't been brought up to speed by the person who modified your Tivo. Firstly, you will only get up to 7 days guide data, unless the current sources for the guide change in the future. That's why, as of today, guide data for the 15th February isn't there yet, but maybe there this evening? Remember, this is a volunteer driven effort with no guarantees. I think you'll find all Freeview boxes that get their guide data over the air are also limited to 7 days. Secondly, when setting season passes, you need to retain what has always been the default setting of "First Runs and Reruns". If you modify your season passes to "First Runs only" nothing gets recorded. This may change in future. You don't need to delete your old season passes, but they won't work due to differences in the codes used by the underlying guide data. It's a good idea to delete them though, as you'll then be able to keep track of what you have chosen to record. I think I speak for most people in that the guide has mostly been pretty good so far. If you have any concerns about specifics, please feel free to PM me, and I'll pass these onto the developers handling the NZ guide. The Aussies are only getting 3x days of EPG guide data BTW, so we're comparatively better off. They have so many regions and channels, that NZ is a walk in the park by comparison.

The following Channel Scan process is also worth doing to tidy up channels including Maori (5) and Te-Reo(15) so that you get the correct data.

Go to Read New Messages and Settings

Choose Settings

Choose Channels

Choose Channel Scan

Choose “Delete previously scanned channels”

Let your Tivo scan for channels, then when completed, choose to add them all.

You can then delete any you don’t want listed from the “Channel List” menu item.

I agree, the guide data has been pretty good. There are some channels that seem to have a whole lot of nothing out beyond 3-4 days, but, mostly they pick it up before they need to record. The biggest hassle is trying to record a short series of one-off movies when you can't set the next week to record sometimes because the data doesn't go out that far. All-in-all though I'm pretty happy and don't seem to have missed many episodes.

Many thanks guys, I did not know about any of those details, and knowing that "First Runs only" is broken has saved me a lot of headaches and confusion.

I have put your responses in the  hd.oztivo dot net page of S3WhatToDoAfterPromAndPatch06 (I'm too new to be allowed to post links) which seemed to be a good, central place for it.

I have a few other questions, that I can also add to the wiki:

  1. As I have to use "First Runs and Reruns", I presume that means I have no way to avoid getting repeats, so I am forced to manually inspect and delete them?
  2. I do notice some incorrect guide data, e.g. The TV series "Young Sheldon" being listed a on-off, so no season pass options, and then a movie "Maze Runner" being listed as a season, so had season pass options. And "Find Programs" by Movie, all types incorrectly lists a lot of TV series. I realise this is a community effort, so I wonder if there a way for the community to correct this guide data themselves (e.g. a Google Sheet), or is the best idea to email the developers, or PM you who can pass it on?
  3. I was starting to build a HTPC with MythTV or LibreELEC with TVHeadend - do they use the same source of TV guide data, so would they have the same mistakes sometimes?

Many thanks, Eric

The lack of the first run feature stuffed me up for the first week after I got mine upgraded until I discovered that it didn't work.

I've noticed that the guide data on the Panasonic and Dish have the same sort of thing going on as well. Also strange classifcations along the lines of Terminator 3 (reality, game show) which in the TiVo environment will mess up things like search functions, suggestions, etc. I sometimes wonder if this is deliberate. Assuming the same source data is being used for the ozTiVo EPG now, that would explain your observation.

I subcontract all of the day to day TiVo operations to my SO - & she says she is thrilled to have it back under her control, but it's not "quite the same" as before. So much better than the MagicTv box that I had lined up as the replacement device that she was hesitant to voice any concerns about the TiVo least I take it away from her again. LOL - it really is black magic to some users eh? Even those that we love.
Programs are occasionally not as well catergorised as before - ie selecting "movies" gets more than just movies ect
She notices the 7 day epg limit vs 14 as before, but can live with that.
I blew away all the season passes after the rebuild, but she reenterd the ones that mattered to us - and they are working just fine.
Where is the downside here?
This community effort is a real success story.

Hey all

I've had my Tivo modified by Spong, which has been working great.  Unfortunately today I've turned on the telly and have got this notification on screen.

Now if we try to change channel to clear the screen, Tivo just restarts itself.  Can't even lift the remote without it restarting...

When it has restarted and is on the default welcome page, is there an configuration setting I can change to prevent this from happening?  This happened once before and Spong fixed it for me but I'd like to try and fix this myself!

Cheers,

Denise

You are correct that when setting Season passes now, you will end up with repeats being recorded, but you can go to "Find Programs/To Do list" and delete the repeat tasks before they record. It's debatable whether it's easier to do this, or just delete the duplicate recordings once they've been recorded.

Australian Tivo owners have a page at the OzTivo site where they can go in and modify guide issues. In NZ, our guide is collected in a different way and this feature isn't yet available. The guide is obtained from multiple sources to help overcome gaps and inconsistencies, but it's a "Best Effort" only.

That screen message is normal for a modified Tivo and appears after the Tivo has booted, as certain programs and settings are enabled. That's not your problem. There are no configuration settings you need to change. Back in December I replaced a failing hard disk in your Tivo, but this problem I suspect could be caused by a number of things, e.g. a failing RAM chip, damaged Tivo app, or power supply maybe? Have you eliminated the remote? Happy to take a look if required.

My tivo has been running flawlessly for a few months on the new mod. I re-did a season pass for the News after the mod.

However this week it has just missed TV1 News twice, Tue 13th and now Fri 16th.

Anyone else seeing this?

I have a season pass for 1 news and it has never missed a beat. Have you checked the recording history to see if there is a reason showing? Do you have the season pass set for first run & repeats?

Thanks for that. it's prob my settings then. I see all up coming news with no gaps.

Possibly it could have been another pass/show having higher priority, so i moved my news up 4 places to the top!

Latest stats for Modified Tivo connections to the new OzTivo Server. Aussie behind NZ in both categories.

Statistics TiVo-AUNZ APP [11:59 PM]
*1411 units seen (+8 since yesterday), 1171 active in the last 7 days*
> AU 698 TSN's seen (+0.4% in 24hrs), 584 active (+0.3%) in the last 7 days
> NZ 709 TSN's seen (+0.9% in 24hrs), 586 active (+1.4%) in the last 7 days

Does anyone have the latest stats?

Makes interesting reading especially when you consider that all of the above Tivos would have been scrapped but for the ingenuity of some clever people

Well done to all the team working on keeping these Tivo's going.

I have one TiVo that was still going and one that wont boot up, but one might be worth resurrecting when a program recording conflict occurs on the Panasonic. You never know I might learn to love it again.
With the new software does the TiVo still take an age to boot up? And does it still have to be recording constantly, aka live pause or does the new software allow it to go back to sleep after a recording like the Panasonic?
What sort of price to rechip/convert? I live in Brown's bay on the shore.

I've pretty much moved on now with the Panasonic but still learning some of the more quirky controls.
I like that it has a proper screen saver
I like that i can edit a recorded programme right there on the screen
I like that i can give recorded programs new headers and lock programs so they can't be deleted accidentally.
I like that I can watch You tube Lightbox and Netflix with a button push.
I like that I can add a usb flash drive or hdd as separate content.
I especially like that i can set the recorder to go to sleep at the end of a recording and wake up at the beginning of the next one rather than recording something twenty four hours a day seven days a week increasing power consumption and wear and tear.
And I like that it has a on-off switch right there on the front instead of scrambling around at the back hoping I'm pulling out the correct plug.
And I like that I don't have to go away and make tea and toast when turned on even from a complete reboot.

I don't like that i have to push the info button twice to see how far I'm though the program when fast forwarding.
I don't like that I have to push a ok button to start playing prerecorded content rather than the play button.
I especially don't like that the remote doesn't have a mute button, honestly.
And I especially don't like having a limit on the number of programs that can be set to record
But l can work with most of these.

Robin
