Hi

I have a Samsung tv and I am having issues with 2 tivo boxes, when you set video output to native or hybrid it’s sets say tv one at 1080i however if you switch to an sd channel say choice and then switch back to tv one it shows tv one at 576 resolution you can see it’s not as clear.

The info banner on the tv confirms it’s sd and then if you go into the tivo it has reverted back to 576 fixed (the default setting) not sure if the tv is doing this or the tivo. It’s diving me crazy and makes the tivo useless unless you are happy with sd only.

Any idea of a fix or anyone having a similar issue, 2018 Samsung and also a 2016. Model do this.

Thanks

Hi Tivo guru's,

My Tivo has had the grey screen twice in the past week or so. ( it has been modified to get the OzTivo EPG )

My gut is telling me it is the hard drive.

What is the best drive to use these days, if I recall WD Green was the flavour for a while.

Thanks

John

Mine has a 2Tb Green drive and the only issues that I have had since modding are one lockup and one spontaneous reboot.

I don't think you'll find new WD green drives around any more. Several models of these needed to have their idle timeout settings modified to survive a warm reboot in the Tivo, so generally I wouldn't recommend them. The drives I use, and are generally favoured for Tivos  are the WD purple surveillance drives designed for 24/7 operation. They're fairly quiet and run cool. I would recommend against general desktop 7200rpm drives. The WD Red NAS drive range are also good options, but a little more pricey.

Rather than using the Hybrid setting, I'd recommend setting the resolution to 1080i fixed in the settings menu, which is the default setting. Let the Tivo scale SD content up to 1080i rather than forcing your TV to do it and see if that helps your problem, which isn't very common.

Hi, one of my tivos gets the green flashing/blinking light only after a power outage.  This has happened a few times now and each time I have used the hairdryer fix which consists on removing the casing and blowing hot air from the hairdryer onto a certain part for 1 min which has worked well up until now.  It just won't stop blinking now.  I have seen a permanent fix for this problem on a forum on geekzone called "Tivo Stopped Working" by Skolink #1894464  dated 02/11/2017.

His instructions on how to isolated the RAM chip that is causing the power problem by using a hairdryer and corrugated cardboard was very clear to follow and looked very easy to fix.  Unfortunately for me I do not know how to solder with a soldering iron, I suppose it's got to do with that I am female and just too nervous to give it a go encase I make a complete mess of it, so I won't even go there.

I am hoping there are others here on this forum who have had this problem and have fixed and replace the faulty RAM chip might consider offering their services to fix my tivo for me.  I am based on the North Shore, Auckland.

Also just another subject in regards to tivo.  Is there ever going to be a fix to get the "multi room viewing" feature up and running?  I have so much missed this feature.  I can still transfer tivo recordings from the playlists only to my computer, but can't transfer from computer back to any tivos or between tivos to tivos even though they can still see each other as well as my pc.  Thanks.

Consider having a chat to @Spong who is in your neck of the woods.  Note this is his job, so it would be a commercial service and not beer money.  He did my chip replaement at what I considered to be a very reasonable rate.  http://www.hillcrest.net.nz/

I'd love the multi-room thing fixed, but its just not going to happen, I don't believe.

This process ideally requires the use of a hot-air reworking station due to the extremely fine pitch of the RAM chips. A conventional, even very fine tipped soldering iron would be extremely difficult, although not impossible when used this in conjunction with desolderwick and flux. This hasn't been something I've been prepared to tackle with the cost of replacement Tivos being so low these days. However, if you have a Tivo equipped with a MAK, there is some justification in attacking this. I now have a hot-air station, and have been considering source some RAM chips for these, so maybe setup for this in the future.

And no, sadly the multi-room transfer idea is pretty much dead now. You can still transfer recordings back and forth from a PC with pyTivo and one way with kmttg as long as you have a MAK installed.

Don't attempt this fix. As Spong said the RAM chip has very tiny legs (fine pitch) and soldering the new one on was quite a frustrating task. After working for a while my fix failed and I threw out that motherboard. Perhaps if I'd had my desoldering heat gun at that stage it might have been more successful.

I haven't looked recently, but the price of a TiVo on Trademe dropped below the cost of buying new RAM chips from Element14.

Apologies if this has been discussed before but has anyone noticed double entries in the program guide, starting 5 minutes apart, and it records 5 minutes of a program?

Yes, all the time since the change in Epg way last year.   Sometimes the recordings won’t start because of it either or there were double ups.   Found simply adding a manual recording was better & easier.

doubt that much can and would be done about it as even sometimes the epg data doesn’t even match Freeview data.

Thanks everyone who responded to my query re green flashing LED light.

In response to Spong I do have a MAK and downloaded pyTivo but I don't not know how to transfer from pc to tivo with pyTivo only tivo to pc as that is the only option I have, so I started to search the internet on how to transfer pc to tivo with pyTivo and I came across one of your postings in another Tivo posting dated 25/06/2018 in regards to this matter. That forum is now locked.

From what I can gather, I've also downloaded the wrong pyTivo like someone else on that particular forum and you suggested to them this:

(That's not the one I used. I used this as a starting point.: https://pytivo.sourceforge.io/wiki/index.php/Windows_Install

If you want to make life easier, I can supply my pre-configured version from my Dropbox, including the additional support files needed, along with a step by step tutorial.

PM if you would like this.)

I am hoping and would be very grateful if you could supply your pre-configured version to me.  It would be so much appreciated as I can then transfer some recordings from one tivo to another tivo via the pyTivo software on my pc.  Even though it is going to be a longer process than before, the need is still there on the odd occasions, especially from the lounge tivo to the bedroom tivos and vice versa.

Just one question when I downloaded my version of pyTivo it asked me if I have a MAK and if so I should use this - was that correct procedure or should I have ignored that since our MAK's and our Tivo Desktop software is now only partially working.  Thanks.😄

I'll PM you via email with the details Christine. I do remember that you asked me for help back in late 2017, which I provided, then you went off and had your Tivos modified elsewhere because they were cheaper. I'd just like to say that I've helped a lot of people along the way, and provided support behind the scenes with this project also. I intend to be here long term and loyalty is something I do appreciate.

Anyone want one of these in Palmerston North?

We're just not using ours anymore, having switched to the on demand options for catchup/don't actually watch local TV much anymore anyway.

Not sure if it still works even.  Has been powered up though, so assume it's all good.  Changed the chip and was talking to the new EPG server.

Not keen to sell on trademe due to tech nature to support now, but happy to pass on to someone local.
