In my (very) humble opinion, some of these things do sound complicated, but OTOH they generally work pretty well once they're up and running.

Fr'instance, I have a tuner card in my main PC (not a laptop of course) that can record / play TV throughout the house and it plays my movie / TV library as well, all using Emby (or Jellyfin / Plex as so inclined).
