Is there a way to get it to do back to back recordings using the same tuner?

i.e. the news and then masterchef

Program it using the old fashioned start-finish time instead of via the EPG.

Thats the only way I know. I make sure all my program recordings from the EPG extend at least 5 mins past the end time of the program to guarantee I get the ending, therefore they are still recording when the next program starts. If the second program is also to be recorded it does that on the other tuner so there is a slight overlap, each one being an individual file on the HDD

No issues there as far as I am concerned however you asked about recording using only one tuner (not sure why). I may stand corrected but I think that using the timer start-finish is the only way to lump more than 1 program into a single recording (single file on the HDD).

Other tuner is recording modern family at the same time.

I think I've found the trick.

make the news finihs on time and, masterchef start ontime for their season pass settings.

Yeah, shame they don't make a 3 or 4 tuner model...

Start and finish at the same time or with a small delay is the only way, the only risk I guess is that you may miss the finish of the first program.  Timer recording is easy anyway, no drama IMO using that when I have to.

Yes when I have two consecutive programs scheduled on same channel, I change so the first program recording ends on time. This is my default for programs like news, campbell live etc. Other programs where they might run long, or the ending is particularly important, for example, Survivor or similar, I extend the recording.
