Anyone tried to use a non tivo drive instead of tivo's hidiously expensive expansion drive?
According to some people online, if its formatted with exFAT it should work although it will say its not compatible when first connected. Anyone tried that?

Would it only work on the eSata connector or USB 2 also?

The advice on oztivo forums has always been that only the official external drive will work, but perhaps it is possible. Have you considered the option of replacing the internal drive? It is tidier and means you don't loose all your shows (yes all) when you unplug the external drive.

Thanks yeah I have, I could do it just a tad apprehensive about it. Cheaper option for sure. Which instructions do you recommend?

Just follow the WinMFS guide on the MFSlive website. Use WinMFS to do a backup and restore, or disk-to-disk copy if you want to keep your shows.
Use WinMFS version BETA 9.3g (for Oz/NZ TiVoHD) not 9.3f
In Win7 you need to run WinMFS with administrative rights, not just be logged on as an administrator, otherwise the drive will not be visible.
Also, if you want to use a Western Digital green drive, then you need to disable the Intellipark feature using wdidle3.exe. Otherwise you will have to pull the power every time the TiVoHD restarts.

Can you please advise if this drive http://www.itexpress.co.nz/epages/shop.sf/?ObjectPath=/Shops/itexpress/Products/DRR280RS is compatible?

2. What is the maximum size HDD that I can choose to upgrade the internal drive?

Well it would have been, but was on clearance. I believe 1.5TB drive will work, but you will only get 1.2TB of capacity (without replacing the PROM chip on motherboard).
