I'm looking for a camera also, this morning a i saw this at NL, the 750D with $300 cashback and two lenses looks like a fairly reasonable deal but the D5500 overall seems to be favoured

in practical terms how useful is the 70-300 lense given I would be a bum amateur who just wants to take nice family pics and the odd landscape/shiny thing :P

Very useful. That lens itself costs $600

I used a similar lens yesterday at our daughters school choir concert.  Got right up nice and close to them with this, whilst parents all around me were holding their phones up to capture the heads of everyone in front of them.

Yes, it's useful when you need it.  Much like every tool really.

Awesome, that pretty much has me sold! The catalyst for buying a DSLR is Daughter has a cheerleading comp in Hawaii next year so the ability to do reasonable pics from afar is probably fairly important

That makes it seem all like a fairly well priced bit of kit, just got to convince the 'bank/SWMBO' now
