I am very keen on the 200D now, comparing it to the 1500D is mind blowing as its pretty much the same price but has many better features. Really happy I did not buy the 1500D now.

This guy has some videos on the 200D which is a very good DSLR for a first time user. He give good clear breakdown and look at the 200D

I've got a 1500D Twin Lens Kit. 18-55 & 75-300 standard kit lenses.

It's been excellent for a first-time DSLR user such as myself.

I was about to buy the 1500D also, and although it does look like a good DSLR to start with I compared it to the 200d and found although the 200d is 1 year older (nothing really) it seemed to be a fair bit better than the 1500d and surprisingly it's about the same price.

From image quality point of view I think they would be similar but the 200d has more features and higher specs and no disadvantage to the 1500d.

I think if I were in your situation, I'd certainly be getting the 200D

I have been looking at the Cannon M50 (I think referenced earlier by someone) and the Panasonic GH5 (not in the price range requested).

I an not a digital photography fan, and am more interested in video photography now. I still shoot film in 120 format in a box brownie which shows how up-to-date I am.

I would be interested in knowing the difference between the 200D and M50.

Looking at specs only.

1. Sensor size same, PQ should be roughly the same.

2. the M50 is way more feature packed.

3. M = mirrorless, D = mirror present

4. from specs only M should be really good

check reviews, esp if tony northup has one - he gives real world reviews from the perspective of the tergeted market buyer

I've just pulled the trigger on the EOS 77D, my last camera was an EOS 350D I bought in 2007 and finally gave up the ghost last year.

I was choosing between the 80D and 77D, at the end of the day came down to price.

PB tech is running a sale at the moment. Nothing special, they have several each year.

For OP this brings more options into their budget:

Canon 200D kit $749

Canon M50 kit $899

Canon 800D $999.

I have an 800D, and really like it, but given OP asked about a travel camera in a previous thread, the M50 could be worth a look, it's not a DSLR but is fully featured (except for a mirror of course), and a lot more compact than the DSLR (same sensor used on all camera's on the list).

Thanks guys, JB HiFi had the 200d for $1149, there was no way I would pay that but they took the price down to $749 without me even asking. I was pretty happy with that as I also had a $50 JB HiFi voucher.

Noel Leming also have it on special at the moment for $738 which is the cheapest I have seen it in a store.

It's all wrapped up for my wife's birthday in June so we will try it out then.

If this camera was bought with travel in mind and that will be soon, I wouldn't wait until June. My 1st digital camera died 3 days into a trip to Europe. You need some time to sort out early failure which can be a feature of electronic products. A trip to South Africa and Botswana coincided with the rise in popularity of DSLRs. Everywhere we went there'd be little huddles of people trying to work out how the camera they'd just bought worked.

Good decision on the 200d.   Canon just went too cheap on the 3000d with its plastic lens mount, no dioptre control for the viewfinder, & a really old sensor.
