Has anyone come across Yammer, in their travels?

This new social networking site has been introduced at work, with an enthusiastic uptake, but I wonder, does social media really have a place in the collaboration society?

I am failing to see how it is any different from Facebook, and the like, however you can ensure that your posts are only viewed by particular groups.

Also, you can subscribe to someone, and they will receive an email notification. Needless to say, it was a bit daunting getting and email saying that the Asia Pacific CRM was following me. Not sure why, but maybe I should post something insightful?

Thought on Yammer?

Yammer is nothing new really. It's like a "Twitter for companies" and was bought by Microsoft last year, now being incorporated into their other internal tools (such as as Sharepoint).

Have you seen it work successfully in the corporate environment yet? 

I am of the social media generation, but I am not sure I enjoy social media at work - other then checking FB in my breaks, and when I am bored, and when I am waiting for a Domino server to do its thing.

Yes, it's pretty successful around organisations. One good example of use in New Zealand in inside Telecom. People seem to like the service pretty much.

We've been using it for over two years now and I've integrated it into our SharePoint 2007. It is more like Facebook for business. We use it to ask questions about jobs, products and also to show projects we are individually working on. You can post pictures and video as well. Also it has been great at bringing our branches together particular now that we are located in both NZ and AUS. It really fires up when there's a test match on :)

We aren't a big organisation at around 50 employees but I think it suits us really well.

Yammer is like Facebook but private. Only members from the same company can join their group. It's pretty good with social stuff like announcements/updates etc be it from the CEO or a normal desk clerk. You can also create groups inside the main organisation to keep them private and do some collaborative stuff.

I started the Yammer revolution at my last job just 2 weeks before I left as Microsoft had just purchased the company. Went viral very quickly then started slow death as someone invited the HR group. Everyone was cautious with their updates etc. Had to pay from thereon to keep groups private and no trial was available.




Do whatever you want to do man.

We're a global company of approx 7000 employees.

We can't even use the knowledge communities on Sharepoint well.

I've really pushed SharePoint here at work and it is paying off with high staff uptake. We were very reliant on local server file shares which comes with lots of duplication and old/wrong documentation. To make sure staff use it we only give them one option. We'll probably shift to Office 365 and the fact MS now integrate Yammer is really great.

Yes, we too will have O365 by end of Q2.

Yammer on its own has value, but it becomes really powerful when you use it to bring products like CRM and SharePoint together.  Its also a way to "mobilise" an application or conversation as you can join in conversations on CRM or SharePoint from a native Windows Phone, IOS or Android yammer app, for example.

We use Yammer as organisation social network at Jade.

We've had it for a few months, and even with thousands of employees it doesn't really seem to be used. Not sure why, seems like a good way to discuss technical issues. Yammer seems like a cross between forums and facebook to me.

You get a general 'all company' front page, but you can create private groups within this too.  ~So you can open this up to just a few people if your requirement is more private.
