Just recently, I've started to be bombarded by Gmail spam. Really crude stuff - around 100 a day.

The Gmail spam filters aren't catching it. The only thing that goes into Gmail's junk folder are the occasional genuine email.

I'm at a loss as to what to do. I can't see any gmail settings that I can tweak to make the spam filter more aggressive.

It's just the standard free gmail.

Can anyone help .... please.

I too have been hit with spam lately to my gmail account.
Luckily it’s going into the spam folder.
I’ve had the gmail address since they were in beta and it’s never been this bad.
I can sit and watch the unread email count in the spam folder go up slowly in real time.

Spam does seem to have increased, but my free gmail filter catches 99% of it and I have only a few false positives. Maybe mark all the spam as spam and see if it improves?

Not sure marking each and every email as spam would help. All coming from different addresses/ domains

I don't know the answer - but basically, there aren't many settings (apart from very basic blocking) in gmail's system.

Are you actually marking the offending items in gmail as 'report as spam'? Gmail needs all the help it can get in learning about spam.

The only thing that you may be able to do is use another email client to provide an extra level of spam filtering on top of google's.

How (and on what) do you usually access your gmail?

e.g. Windows PC/gmail in browser

Access is mainly from ios devices, followed by outlook on laptop. Don't access much from gmail.com in browsere, but I've looked there and can't see any settings that help.

Pretty much the answer is to help Gmail by marking it as spam so it learns and throws it into it's spam filter. Can bet that it's not just you it's going to be a fair few people (I too have had my gmail account since the dawn of time) and I can mention that the uptick in spam has been increasing.

Best you can do is be proactive and mark it all as spam so Gmail can learn.

There aren't really any settings in gmail - generally it just works.

I feel your pain - though touch wood - I haven't had that problem.

Most third party filters would require some sort of client to be running - So for example if you have gmail going to outlook on a laptop, you could install some extra filtering on that - but it would need to be 'on' to do the filtering. So if the laptop is asleep and you are on your iphone, there would be no filtering. Maybe someone else has some more helpful thoughts.

Yeah - I've had my gmail address for as long as I can remember and don't want to have to let it go. In the absence of any other solutions, I hope you're right...

Up until about 12 months ago I got very little, but since then it fluctuates between 10-12 a day and 100-120 a day.

I'm getting around 40 a day this week, but GMail does catch all of it.

All my questionable stuff like this goes into spam on there, as it has for years now, obvious stuff I don't even need to open to know its crap.

I get the odd false positive and about 20-30 spams per day going in there.

Occasionally one in the inbox that is less obvious from the subject, but if I report those it seems that ones like it will go to the spam folder for a while.

I'm actually seeing a lot more HAM on Gmail of late, with an increasing number of false positives.

Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat APAC as a Technology Evangelist and Portfolio Architect. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.

Has anyone else started getting spam via Google drive? That has no spam filter at all and I've started getting bombarded with file sharing requests that are all classic spam subject lines.

I'll give them credit they found away the spam filter doing this but it's bloomin annoying getting those notifications.
