All the above provides an example of why Musk’s push for freedom of speech on Twitter is important. Has it occurred to people that their world view has been curated? It is extremely naive to believe that Murdoch is the only one who manipulates the news.
By the same token, when Twitter banned people, it was defended as being allowed because it is a private company. But now it is even more private an entity, able to set its own rules, but people are up in arms because the rules may be different?

I don’t think people should be afraid that Musk owns the echo chamber. I imagine he’ll just do a bit of panel-beating on it. The size of the sledgehammer might be the main variable.

But then GZ is the only social media I do, so what happens to Twitter is all pretty much irrelevant to me.

Not sure why you think Musk is some defender of free speech when he tries to cancel anyone who criticises him

Several examples here https://consequence.net/2022/03/elon-musk-free-speech-twitter/

Much the same here, in that I don’t use Twitter so it doesn’t affect me but I can’t stand Musk.

Because that is his stated reason for buying Twitter.

So I’m taking it at face value. I mean when has he ever failed to deliver? (/s)

Despite being a Tesla owner, I don’t subscribe to the Elon Musk fan club (members normally identified by referring to him by his first name, as if a personal acquaintance). He has his flaws like the rest of us.

There’s a good chance he’ll get bored with Twitter pretty quickly and hand it off to someone else to administer.

There's a chance he may not as well, though.

Dingbatt:

Journeyman:

Nothing good can come from this. He isn't buying Twitter because he thinks there's great investment potential. He's not buying it so he can synergise its technology with his cars. He wants it to be his personal plaything.

Really?

It’s an ill wind that blows nobody any good.

It has been worth it so far just for the reaction it has caused.

Please, how is this different from Rupert Murdoch, Ted Turner or Jeff Bezos?

Or the other option is he gets bored with his “plaything” and shuts it down.

At an estimated 25-30 billion in debt required to purchase it at around 4.5-5% (from memory this is what WSJ estimated he would need to do) you're looking at about 1-1.5billion servicing cost per year.  Twitter isn't returning numbers to service this.  Furthermore due to this debt I doubt he'd just shut it down, unless there's a way to stiff the lenders I guess.

So I wonder if your comment that it could be for the reaction is the correct take.

Bottom line :
Its twitter
So, who cares what he does with it.

Oh, will I be able to trust the Kardashian tweets now ?
Will Trumps tweets no longer be seen as a factual news source
:-)

Twitter says - recent massive increases and decreases in followers is organic. In each case caused by new accounts joining + existing accounts closing:

Techcrunch: Twitter says that fluctuations in follower counts that occurred on its platform after it announced that it had agreed to be acquired by Elon Musk were organic in nature.

Once the news was announced, numerous high-profile cases saw increases or decreases in followers. Twitter confirmed to TechCrunch that these fluctuations were the result of new account creation and deactivation and were not caused by bots or due to action on the social media giant’s part.

Former President Barack Obama, who holds the most followed account on Twitter, lost more than 300,000

Something similar to the Spotify controversy seems to be occuring. Imo that was/is substantial. I see a lot less playlist shares than I used to.

Makes perfect sense if you subscribe to the "takes one to know one" school of thought.
