Edwood: Hmmm... Maybe we could point a big light into the sky in the shape of an H.  It's night time, so he might see it and come running...

I'm doubley screwed.

The MHEG5 EPG Collector doesn't work for me :(.  The app just crashes when it runs the .exe. (Vista).

With no EPG, and no alternative, and an imminent overseas business trip, i'm feeling very vulnerable about the wifey factor.

OH dear :(

Try running it as an administrator. Also the 'current directory' needs to be the exe directorty when you run it

Plenty of support here

Hooray - I'm back in action.

I downloaded the epg.xml directly this morning and saw that the timestamps were all up to date and it had new data. Media Centre now has updated listings.

Phew.

Three things to look at:

- Run As Administrator (right-click and select Run As Administrator)
- If you are running this on a \Program Files folder, right-click and Properties. Make sure users have write access to EPG Collector folder
- Windows Firewall (or any other software firewall) should allow the EPG Collector program through.

Thanks for your feedback. I was posting in a couple of threads, and neglected to update this one...

I fixed the problem by doing a 'fresh install' instead of an 'over the top' install.

I believe the application was crashing due to incompatibilities my existing very old version, and the new version I installed over the top.
ie. ini files were preserved, and caused the newer version to crash.

Issue resolved by installing EPG Collector in a new directory.

Thx again.

We recommend de-installing any old version before installing a new one if you use the msi route.

There shouldn't be any problems and it works some times. It looks like it may be an issue with the Windows installer.

Cheers

Good to hear. I had the same issue myself but will have to wait till tonight to confirm it is working again. I had sent a PM to the site owner but had not had a reply yet. Obviously he has fixed it though.

Was this from the H web site? I am still only seeing old data. I want to see if I can run EPG collector as currently dead in the water but not having much luck so far. Am I missing something there does not seem to be a How to get up and running type file?

Nety, my Guide has started working again properly tonight totally out of the blue. (I think it would have got the latest data download around 7pm).

I have done nothing to my system to stuff up the EPG or to fix it - it just works again which is bloody marvelous as my wife was starting to get pretty dark with me and the flash black box that sits quietly underneath the tele doing its thing.

My data does come from H so I have no idea what has been going on behind the scenes but it seems to be fixed so if anyone else out there has been having similar issues, hope has arrived.

Our light in the sky worked!

I now have both processes working, and have set up two scheduled jobs - one for ftp, one for MHEG5. The MHEG5 one is disabled, so if the ftp fails, I can easily just enable the MHEG5 schedule.

If I was really smart, I'd write a batch file to confirm the FTP was getting current data, and trigger the MHEG5 process if it failed.

ie. (Psudocode)...
exec GetEPGviaFTP.bat
IF Exists epg.xml
..THEN if date(now) > (modifiedDate(epg.xml) +2 day)
....THEN exec getEPGviaMHEG5.bat
..endif
endif

heheh... it's fun being a nub sometimes :)

I'd recommend the EPG collector option if you can get it going. As the guide information is part of the transmission It's not going to stop working, or need someone to maintain it... I got caught out, and I'm glad I spent the effort getting it working.

SJB even made some additions to the collector to make sure it worked with Bladerunner.

Yeah my thought is to use a combination of MHEG5 for Freeview and DVB-S sky feeds for the other channels. I agree that getting the data this way is a more reliable method although one concern is what happens if Freeview change the format slightly? I seem to recall that this does happen ever so often.
At the moment I am back with the web feed as I need the free time to sit down and change it all over. When I switched it when the web feed was down it screwed up the channels as I did not set the channels to blank in BSE. I had to go to backup to clear that up.

The MHEG5 format changed about 6 months ago when they added program references. That happened just before I released the first version of EPG Collector.

The decoding process is controlled by an ini file which could cope with minor changes. If there were major changes I would release a new version.

This is a well supported project and the source is available on Sourceforge so there is no way you would be left high and dry.

And what happens if the format of the web page for the internet feed changes? Wheres the support and source code for that project?

Absolutely. Not saying the web source would be any better, in fact as it is run by one person I am 100% reliant on them fixing any problems vers open source means it is not one person. I was just interested in getting feedback on how it would handle changes.
