https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/diary/
as you can see 2,084,391 posts with that hashtag
off the top of your head Is there a way to narrow that result down by location?

Not aware of that feature there.
My point was about where nowadays all mainstream discussions take place. Instagram. As many people have nothing but smartphones.
You can start posting there under your domain (diary.nz) as a name (just checked it is vacant for now) and stipulate your location if you wish. Ad that hash tag (#diary) to all your posts and if your content attracts attention - people will see your site in your profile description and if they follow or comment - you'll be able to guess their location via their post or profile description.
Add google analytics code to your site and you will see where the visitors are coming from.

You now have the first follower :-) to try how stuff works. Yep. Link to your site works. "Bio" allows to add more info - i.e what you intend to post there. e.g. check on your "follower" how it looks. You not necessarily need to put your name under that profile... Profile picture - could be that photo from your site...

Yep I will "clean up" the entry later today. Still thinking about how to use diary.nz . Thinking out loud later today also I will be playing with the concept of allowing a user to embed a video post EASILY. maybe the ability to embed a Instagram video ...... as i say thinking out loud.

Just so there was a closure on this subject. I have not yet but shortly I will use the address as a Aliexpress affiliate conduit Easy to setup and maintain. Until I come up with a better idea.

How about a site that pulls in public content about ... diaries?
E.g from Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, blogs etc.
Become a hub for the diary industry!
Get sponsorship from diary companies, annual awards for best diaries etc.
