I just got an SMS from 2034 advertising Animates deals. At the end it says Optout TXT STOP

Not having a pet, I know for sure I never put my number into animates database. Though I can't rule out that someone random didn't put my number in.

As listed in Skinny's premium SMS prices sheet, 2034 / Animates costs 20c a text to reply. So I can opt out of something I never signed up for, for 20c.

20c isn't a big deal, but it seems wrong to have to pay to optout of something you didn't sign up for. I'm just curious if this was sent to lots of other people too?

First off...  Forward it to the DIA Anti-Spam https://www.dia.govt.nz/press.nsf/d77da9b523f12931cc256ac5000d19b6/39c88602c8463394cc257c85006f94ad!OpenDocument

Secondly per 7.8.4 in http://www.tcf.org.nz/library/1b453754-80dc-4a75-a0f2-22aef7050333.cmr (TCF Mobile Messaging Services Code 2014) STOP must be free unless contracted out, as it's spam, it should be free.  If you get charged, raise a dispute.

Thanks for that link! I emailed Skinny the other day about a Kathmandu marketing text which I replied to with STOP and it failed to go through due to a $0.00 balance on my account. Since I always use a combo I never carry a balance except when I'm topping up just prior to renewing a combo. They replied to say that STOP texts still incur a charge if it goes to a premium number. I knew there was a rule somewhere saying STOP messages should be non-chargable so will reply back with the reference given above and see what they say.

Skinny has come back to me suggesting I contact Kathmandu. Doesn't really solve the issue of them charging for opting-out so will contact TCF and see what they have to say. Does anyone have any experience with TCF?
