From their FAQ's:

My friend is going overseas and has given me their Skinny Broadband modem. Can I use their modem?

Yes you can so long as you are in a Skinny Broadband coverage area (check at Just make sure your friend has contacted Skinny to close their Skinny Broadband account first (and unlinked it from their Skinny Mobile account if they have linked the two accounts). You can then register your own Skinny Broadband account with your own payment details. You must call us to let us know your address and VOILA - you're good to go.
