I have been using the Skinny Wireless Home Broadband service for some six months now with generally good speed results (at least 10mbps+ download) however more recently in the last two weeks speeds have been as low as 1 - 2 Mbps download. Upload speeds are generally not too bad.

I suspect it is a result of overloading on the local cell site. Would anyone from Skinny be able to confirm if this is the case? Is there a way to lock the modem to another cell site which isn't as overloaded? Or any plans to upgrade capacity in the area?

Many thanks

Yeah, my speeds in Tuakau have dropped from 45mbdown last march (ish) when the local tower was upgraded to as low as 5 in peak hours now as uptake has taken off over this last year. Can you imagine if they DID go 'unlimited' what might happen?

What I'd like is a cap on clients that ensured a minimum of (for eg) 10mb down...

It's Spark that would need to confirm the load on the serving cell but I suspect you have already answered your own question

Why would you try to use it directly in your mobile??

Skinny won't let you 'roam' between sites so there is NO advantage to what you're doing. 🙄

AFAIK The modem is also 'locked' to a specific tower, so perhaps it is also IMEI locked too 🤔

Yea it looks the IMEI number and the SIM card merge together to the Skinny network only. but if the IMEI number can be clone or copy to the android smart phone it work.

Actually the request was so i could check the state of the tower and sector you are located in.

As your a skinny customer, Spark (and thus myself) don't even have access to the records to put a big red mark next to your name (although that would be obseen for any service provider to do to you)

With that said, since you don't wish to actually seek support, i would have to deem this thread a soapbox...

SIM is TAC locked to Skinny modem, so no.

Just asking but have you moved the modem around the house at all? I found with mine it made a 30% difference to my download speeds!

I had it behind my PC to use the LAN connection for that, the TV and Tivo but found there was no advantage so moved it closer to an outside wall with good results.
