I am thinking of making a home-made version of this iPad stand:

http://xflexstand.com/

I have most of the components sussed out in my head, except for the flexible neck. I could buy a cheap gooseneck table lamp like one of these:

http://www.wayfair.com/Adesso-Eternity-Gooseneck-Desk-Lamp-5030-22-AE1173.html

and just use the flexy bit but that would mean throwing away the base and the lamp head.

Does anyone know whether flexible steel tube can be bought as a stand-alone product, by the length? Something like the hose that's used in flexible shower fittings but it needs to be stiffer and be able to hold its shape and take some weight.

I have googled for this but without success.

Thanks

Suggest a goose neck microphone stand as it will have metal thread at the ends and is easy/cheap to come by, making it easier to mount to something solid. Try Surplustronics in Auckland.

As above, you could try jaycar or surplustronics depending on where you are in the country

Edit: And please share a photo of it when your're done :)

Brilliant and perfect - thanks Neil. GZ at its best.

The jaycay 45 cm gooseneck should be just right - thanks Nick.

For the iPad mount, I plan to use one of these:

http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/tools-repair-kits/other/auction-525766631.htm

and cut one of the cups off, and somehow attach one end of the gooseneck to the then-exposed hollow handle of the suction cup - and attach in the same way that the original does it. Just need to make sure that there's not too much suction from the industrial strength suction cup - wouldn't want to damage the back of the iPad.

Generaly those flexible stands just have one or more pieces of soft steel rod inside a piece of plastic flexi conduit.

Goosenecks do not age well with constant movement so get one thicker than you need or it will get too floppy too quickly.
